With another week, the NFL playoffs draw near. At the same time, other teams will plan for a quarterback change?
Like falling snow, NFL teams begin to accumulate information about their next quarterback. Every team mentioned in this article desperately needs a quarterback going forth. With elite quarterback play, these teams would be easily playoff bound. Instead, they are relegated to simple also-ran status. Yes, a good quarterback makes all the difference in this league. Now, who will make the next leap forward, armed with a 2023 quarterback better than their predecessor?
New York Jets
Like he said he would, Robert Saleh built this team in his image. A gritty team with toughness and effort, New York constructed a stout defense. Ranking fourth in points and in the top ten in six other categories, the perennially bad Jets turn somewhat of a corner. Now, they need a quarterback. Zach Wilson never regressed, because he never evolved. The team lost games because of his play. As of this writing, the Jets scored twenty or fewer eight times in 2022. The offense boasts a talented line and two-thirds of a formidable trio. Garrett Wilson should tally a thousand yards in his rookie season. Additionally, in the backfield, Breece Hall, when he gets healthy affords the Jets the ability to build a solid core. Moreover, with less than three million dollars in 2023 dead cap money, New York can absorb a quarterback salary, while looking to move on from Zach Wilson, whose 54.5 completion percentage remains the reddest of flags.

Indianapolis Colts
Jim Irsay turned what looked like a rising playoff team, beset by injury into a disaster. First, hiring an interim coach with zero NFL experience is a terrible look. Next, trading for a past-his-prime Matt Ryan hamstrings the franchise, With a dead cap of eighteen million dollars, the Colts will need to either eat the contract or sign/draft/trade for an upgrade. Remember the Colts still need to pay Jonathan Taylor. Will he stick around a team with revolving quarterbacks? In their defense, the Colts play in a winnable division, devoid of a juggernaut, sitting atop the division. With a solid offensive mind, behind an elite offensive line, all the Colts need o do is find a long-term solution at quarterback.
Best 2023 Fit: Derek Carr
Washington Commanders
For a team with excellent backs and receivers, and a strong defense, Washington fails at signing a competent quarterback. Instead, Washington employs a long list of bland, uninspiring quarterbacks that hold the team. Taylor Heinicke and Carson Wentz, separated by a year of age and one total touchdown, do not instill fear in defenses. Both can be serviceable backups to play in a short burst of relief. yet, neither, at this point will bring you sustained playoff runs. Washington can release Carson Wentz with zero dead cap space. As a result, they stand neck and neck with the Jets and are the most desirable destination for veteran quarterbacks. In all honesty, the NFC East, despite Philly’s 2022 dominance feels rather close. Swing for the fences and throw buckets of money at Baltimore’s best,
2023 QB Fit: Lamar Jackson
Las Vegas Raiders
The sound you hear is the grousing of those Derek Carr loyalists, blaming their defense, and the weather for their team’s failure. Let’s look at the stats. Carr’s 60.8 completion is his lowest since his rookie season. Plus, in the second halves of this season, Carr accounted for ten touchdowns and eight interceptions. This shows an inability to close. On paper, the Raiders’ offense is among the best in the NFL. Now, change the quarterback, what happens? Eight of their nine losses to this point were by just one possession. Elite quarterbacks close that gap, winning half of the games, making the Raiders a ten-win team and a threat in the AFC. In his nine seasons, Carr amassed zero playoff wins and a sub-500 record. Install Jimmy Garappolo, draft a quarterback to develop, and hit the ground running. Derek Carr needs everything perfect around him to succeed. As a result. a new direction fills the stadium and the win column. The Raiders are an NFL joke and that proud franchise deserves much better.
Best 2023 Fit: Draft a quarterback, and sign a veteran bridge.
