2023 NFL Free Agency Preview: AFC East -

Without a doubt, the AFC East is the most confusing division in the NFL. With one free agent signing, each team can change its immediate future.

After twenty years of divisional dominance, the Patriots dismantled their roster. As a result, a power vacuum occurred within the division. Now, many claim the Bills assumed the mantle, proclaiming themselves an elite NFL team. While that could be true, the Bills aren’t running away with the division, as the other three teams continue to close the distance.

New York Jets (Derek Carr, QB)

When you can field a defense that allows 18.6 points a game, with a lockdown secondary, the anemic offense needs help. No current Jet completed more than sixty percent of his passes. Now, Chris Streveler started one game, so the sample size isn’t vast. On top of that, the team went a full season without a 300-yard passing game. Enter Carr. Now, Carr is still under contract, but he owns a clause that forces the Raiders to either guarantee his 2023 contract or release him. After a minitour of bridge burning, it doesn’t look like Carr will help Vegas. Consequently, he finds his way to Jersey as a free agent. Granted, between the ears, Carr’s sensitivity could be a red flag. However, the man is blessed with a strong arm and accuracy. Garrett Wilson will immediately benefit, as Carr will force-feed his top wideout.

Miami Dolphins (David Montgomery, RB)

Everyone knows that Tua Tagovailoa needs to rethink his career after multiple 2022 concussions. Yet, he appears to want to play. Under those circumstances, the Dolphins probably won’t sign a big-name quarterback. Meanwhile, the Dolphins need a running game that forces defenses to play honestly. In 2022, Miami only managed twelve rushing scores and ninety-three first down via the run. Not to mention, fewer dropbacks for Tua means fewer hits. Montgomery provides a pile mover with surprising feet and a strong pad level to extend drives. Basic NFL theory.

Buffalo Bills (Jadeveon Clowney, DE)

When a knee injury sidelined Von Miller for the rest of the season. the Bills needed to blitz more to generate pressure. When Miller returns a bookend would be helpful. Now, at this point, Clowney isn’t a full-time player anymore. In fact, if you just turn him loose on passing downs, the Bills improve the defense. More importantly, a one-year, prove-it deal would not break the bank. After burning out in Cleveland, Clowney sees himself as an elite NFL talent. Four teams in nine seasons, combined with just forty-three career sacks require introspection. The Bills are a threat in the NFL. By adding Clowney with a cheaper deal, the Bills add to a team that needs a better organic pass rush.

New England Patriots (Mecole Hardman, WR)

Usually, the Patriots do not spend excessive dollar amounts on wideouts. Yet, no one fears the New England passing attack. Safeties look comfortable keeping everything in front of them, daring Mac Jones to launch one. For this reason, Hardman makes sense. First, he exemplifies the versatility that Bill Belichick adores, playing outside and taking backfield snaps. Next, in space at all three levels, he can run away from defenders with the ability to break one. The NFL is a marriage of strong scheme and athletic explosion. Currently, the Patriots lack the latter. For the former to work, a player like Hardman needs to find his way to Foxboro.
