NFL Opinion: Hypocrisy, Bravado, And A Goodbye

Between the end of the conference championship games and the Super Bowl usually remains a downtime in the NFL. Yet, the news finds its way.

While we sit in the football doldrums, NFL news does not take a holiday. From hirings to contracts to residual drama seeping into the new month. The NFL, the perpetual carousel spins to the delight of millions. In addition, media types love to fill space on a page.

NFL Celebrates Black History Month

In all honesty, as a Black man. I am conflicted. Although I agree with reflection and remembrance, let’s keep it all the way real. Neither the NBA nor MLB needs a Rooney Rule to force teams to do the right thing and consider hiring minority coaches/administration. Why? The NFL has a racism problem. Like it or not, the league formed in segregation used stereotyping to prohibit Black quarterback play, and does not hire Black coaches at the representative rate of players. When fans lost their collective minds over kneeling almost a decade ago, you know good and well that racism still exists. The league must find a better way than stenciling ” End Racism” behind the end zones. Try hiring qualified hiring Black coaches and management. That needs to be the celebration. Representation matters isn’t just a buzzphrase.

Weird Attachment

If you have ever been divorced, the thought of relishing going back to your former house should make you feel nauseous. For Derek Carr, the chance to play a Pro Bowl at Allegiant Stadium evoked a sense of snarkish joy. Carr, via this tweet, seemed to relish the opportunity. The Raiders do not want Carr around. His two-game banishment at the end of the season cemented that. Few divorces end uglier than Carr and the Raiders. Take it from someone that gleefully signed his final divorce decree, the end needs to become a new beginning. Worse, if Carr gets seriously injured during the Pro Bowl, his 2023 salary becomes guaranteed. If Mark Davis is smart, he exercises any influence to keep his former franchise quarterback off the field. Meanwhile, fans of the Raiders that actually know the game of football will not be subjected to the yearly argument regarding Carr. Everyone wins.

A Word For Brady

Yesterday, Tom Brady announced his retirement. From the video, he looked serious without a hint of reticence. More importantly, he appeared at peace with the decision. By any metric, Tom Brady is the greatest quarterback in league history. Rings and stats all slide in his favor. After watching the reaction, another issue arose. Brady Derangement Syndrome is real. From pundits to opposing fans refusing to give the man his flowers remains industrial-strength hating. Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Chipper Jones, Mike Bossy, and Martin Brodeur defeated the teams that I root for, routinely. Tom Brady’s play kept the Raiders away from the Super Bowl. However, when respect is due, give it. In NFL history, every other quarterback pales in comparison. Yes, that goes for Mahomes, Manning, and Rodgers. Ball doesn’t lie and film spits the truth. Basically, adults should let petty, contrived beef and credit that man.
