Two days after the Kansas City Chiefs rallied to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in Glendale, Arizona, in Super Bowl LVII, there was some big news occurring in another stretch of desert.
The Las Vegas Raiders opted to part ways with quarterback Derek Carr. A second-round pick in 2014 from Fresno State, his stint with the Silver and Black saw him complete 64.6 percent of his passes. That was good for 35,222 yards and more than twice as many touchdown passes (217) as interceptions (99). He also lost 36 of his 80 fumbles. That elevates that turnover number to 135.
In 2016, Carr helped guide the team to the playoffs (the franchise’s first postseason appearance since 2002). However, he suffered a broken leg in a Week 16 win over the Colts and missed the wild card game vs. the Texans.
In 2021, the Raiders were back in the postseason and he starts in what proved to be a 26-19 loss at Cincinnati. The veteran signal-caller threw for 310 yards and one score, but he also served up an interception at the Bengals’ two-yard-line in the closing seconds which sealed the Raiders’ fate.
But Wait, There’s More…
Of course, there are more solid performers available immediately other than Carr. Recently, the Tennessee Titans released tackle Taylor Lewan, wide receiver Robert Woods, linebacker Zach Cunningham and kicker Randy Bullock. The Chicago Bears parted with defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad after just one season with the club. Veteran defensive lineman Michael Brockers has been cut loose by the Detroit Lions.
