NFL Rumors: Aaron Rodgers, DeAndre Hopkins, Derek Carr

The dust has settled on the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl 57 victory and we are just days away from the new NFL league year.

Of course, player movement is at its highest at the dawn of free agency and much like most offseasons, the future of several veteran quarterbacks is dominating the NFL rumor mill, primarily Aaron Rodgers and Derek Carr.

Here are the latest rumors circulating the NFL concerning those two players and a star wideout potentially on the move.

QB Aaron Rodgers – Green Bay Packers

Rumor: According to Adam Schefter, he believes Aaron Rodgers will not return to Green Bay and his two options will ultimately come down to the Jets and retirement.

Despite reports of several interested parties just a month or so ago, the suitors for Aaron Rodgers have apparently dried up, leaving just the Jets if Schefter’s report is to be believed, It wouldn’t be the worst landing spot for the four-time MVP but other options (49ers, Raiders) would likely be better for Rodgers. There is a possibility other options will present themselves. Recent reports indicate that the Dolphins may not be married to Tua Tagovoila moving forward and Rodgers could elevate Miami to Super Bowl contender with Tyreek Hill and company. Rodgers won back-to-back MVPS during the 2020 and 2021 seasons but threw just 26 touchdowns and an uncharacteristic, 12 interceptions in 2022 while the Packers stumbled to 8-9.

WR DeAndre Hopkins – Arizona Cardinals

Rumor: According to Johnny Venerable, keep an eye on the Chiefs, Patriots, and Giants when it comes to a destination for wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins.

The report also adds that Hopkins could be had for just a second-round pick which would likely be an easy price to pay for any team. Hopkins had just 64 receptions for 717 yards and three touchdowns in 2022 but he played in just nine games all year. He missed time in 2021 as well so there is a risk for any team acquiring the 30-year-old, however, in the four seasons prior he was a four-time Pro Bowler and averaged nearly 1,400 yards and nine touchdowns for the Texans and Cardinals. Of the three teams mentioned, the Patriots have the highest second-rounder and could be dealing with a situation where their own star receiver, Jakobi Meyers, departs in free agency.

QB Derek Carr – Free Agent

Rumor: Of the three teams interested in Derek Carr (Carolina, New York, and New Orleans), the Saints appear to be the team that wants him the most, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

The previously cash-strapped have been clearing space at a rapid pace in recent weeks which would make one believe they are anticipating making an offer to Derek Carr. It would make sense. They have already met with Carr twice and can offer a chance for the former Raider to leave the AFC to play in a dome in a division that has no clear leader at this point. In addition, the Jets seem to have their eyes (or hopes) on Aaron Rodgers and may be willing to risk watching Carr sign elsewhere. The Panthers, on the other hand, may have an option with Sam Darnold and a high draft pick so their urgency to sign Carr may not be as feverish as the others. Carr went 6-9 last season with the Raiders, throwing for 3,522 yards and 24 touchdowns.
