Jose Quintana has a small stress fracture in one of his ribs and will miss months of the season. Many were worried about Justin Verlander or Max Scherzer, because of their age but they’re still healthy. Quintana is only 34 and now the New York Mets have to decide on a fifth starter by the end of spring training. The Mets will go with David Peterson or Tylor Megill. If I had to guess, I would go with Peterson, he’s a lefty like Quintana and I feel he’s already better than the Mets’ injured pitcher.
Andrew Painter Should Be Ready Tomorrow
But what if tomorrow never comes? The presumptive fifth starter of the NL Champs has an elbow injury that the Phillies have refused to give a timetable for his potential return. Scott Boras is his agent, and the Phillies are letting him give innocuous comments about the starter’s “tender elbow” now fans are wondering what’s going to happen to one of their top prospects this season. Bailey Falter is the fallback fifth starter. The worry that the media seems to have, is the longer this goes without comment or report from the team means the prospect is unlikely to break training camp with the team later this month.

Giants Prospect Casey Schmitt Ripping Up Spring Training Pitching
This 2020 draftee has been making good plays in the field and hitting the cover off the ball. His early .467 batting average and 1.334 OPS are impressive no matter what the competition. Add one home run and four RBI in 15-at bats and you get some early hype. He went to college and is now 24, so he’s not a young rookie, and I suggest we all keep an eye on him. Especially those who play fantasy baseball, and we know that’s a lot of us.

The World Baseball Classic is A Second Chance Haven
When Cuba plays the Netherlands, former New York Mets slugger, Yoenis Cespedes will take some cuts for his country. Cespedes hasn’t played in Major League Baseball since 2020 when he played his last game for the Mets. This is his second World Baseball Classic and at the age of 37, it makes me wonder if he has one more run in him. I don’t think the Mets would sign him but I could see him signing to be a designated hitter for some team out there. I’m sure he still has power, let’s see if he can make consistent contact. That’s what I’m looking out for.
