Semipro is a microcosm of life itself. Unfortunately, the whining of some alleged adults also permeates this world as well.
Granted, nothing on this planet is worth possessing if no struggle is involved. In the constantly changing world of Semipro, that remains a fact. For the entirety of my eight years covering the game, a number of truly bitter, miserable people exist. Yet, year after year, they line up and play. Others will dig into their pockets and emerge with money to fund an entire season. As a result, one question arises: Why do miserable people hang around the sport if they are profoundly unhappy?
No Grapes, Just Gallons Of Whine
During the offseason, various social media posts rear their heads. Everything from” back in the lab” to ” being that guy”. In all honesty, players who are truly talented never have to say it. In fact, they leave the accolades and descriptions to those rather skilled with words. Wherever this ” lab” is, they need to institute a no-phones policy because too many folks are on James Brown’s internet telling outright lies, with film so grainy, it makes a 2002 Nokia phone look like HD. Yet, the funniest game in Semipro happens when a list gets published, and those residing in their ever-so-soft feelings, become enraged. They chastise the lists and their makers, but if their names were to appear, the creator is a genius. Honestly, living life based on the opinion of others and getting upset about a snub, or notoriety is not for you. With all the accolades comes constructive criticism.

The Fall Guy
We are roughly a month into the spring season and the team has decided to smack the panic button like it was Chris Rock at the Oscars. Provided that adjustments and change occur, wholesale alterations of personnel and coaches should not be happening this early. Too often, whether it’s a singular player or coach, organizations appear too quick with the hook. Now, if you are one of those teams that made a significant change recently, ask yourself one question: Who will you blame when the losses and bad play continue? The definition of insanity is ” doing something over and over and expecting the same results”. The team gets stale, and players stop listening or want to seek personal glory. Why keep a team together that has not won under any circumstance? Semipro contains more dysfunctional relationships than Blueface and Chrisean. (I had to Google them because I am old)
Cinco
If there is one constant in the APDFL, it’s Bruce ” Cinco” Jones of the Alabama Blackhawks. For the longest minute, he’s played in red and black. Cinco also coaches high school football and gives back to his community by passing on his love of the game. While he is a veteran, Jones still approaches the field with the youthful enthusiasm that players ten years younger cannot display. Three things you need to know about Bruce Jones. First, his spat game is cleaner than an Easter Sunday church suit. Next, he shows instincts from playing multiple positions forever. Lastly, he continues to be an ambassador of his city, his team, and his league.
The Wolverine Problem
When the Northeast Georgia Wolverines began EAFL play this season, curious eyes stayed glued to their games. With prestige, rings, and other incentives on the line, Ty Barnes’ team continues to beat teams into submission. With all of the firepower on both sides of the ball, one would expect arrogance or bravado. Yet, to a man, the Wolverines seem to treat the games as a business, quickly dispatching whoever lines up across from them. Some of their players just started their Semipro journey, while others strive for one more ring on the way to a well-deserved retirement. Someone will need to play near-flawless football to send the Wolverines home. In four games, Northeast Georgia allowed exactly six points. If you are in the Atlanta area, information can be found here.
Dream Matchup
In eleven days the WNFC kicks off, and two teams, the Mississippi Panthers and the Utah Falconz have captured initial interest, Each organization brings a collective mindset to the table. Head Coach LeSteven Jackson is accustomed to winning. Perhaps the greatest winner in the history of the APDFL, Jackson instills that mindset into his team. Mississippi added speed and playmaking to a stout offensive line and a pass rush that will disrupt offenses. Meanwhile, Utah offers up an astute braintrust. Longtime readers know defensive line coach Dee Lynch and defensive coordinator Greg Williams from their Utah Revolution days. Between Lynch’s aggression and Williams’ gameplan, the Falconz, on the defensive side of the ball could be a problem for passive teams. With that said, this year’s version of the Coast to Coast Elite will include players from the WFNC.
