The NFL released the entire 2023 regular season schedule on Thursday night. As always, immediate hype and excitement builds for certain matchups on the upcoming slate. That is especially true when a team like the Kansas City Chiefs is involved. Of course, Kansas City will enter the 2023 season as defending Super Bowl champions. Many of their games will receive primetime or stand-alone spotlight, as a result.
The opponents on the Chiefs schedule were already known in advance of the official schedule release. In 2023, Kansas City will face off against the entire AFC East and the entire NFC North. Facing each of the Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers two times total as division opponents will happen, per usual. Elsewhere, the Chiefs will face one team from each of the AFC North, AFC South and NFC East divisions. That includes the Cincinnati Bengals, Jacksonville Jaguars and Philadelphia Eagles, respectively.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at the full 2023 regular season schedule for the Kansas City Chiefs. We will include quick thoughts on each matchup. Let’s kick it off.
Week 1: Vs Detroit Lions, Thursday, September 7th at 7:20 p.m. CT
Some people may be surprised about the Detroit Lions being the opponent for opening night. But for those that have been watching Detroit closely, the hype for them going into 2023 is hot and heavy. While the Chiefs get to raise a Super Bowl banner, the nation will also get to see a fun, upstart Lions team on the national stage.
Week 2: At Jacksonville Jaguars, Sunday, September 17th at Noon CT
These two teams met twice last year, both at Arrowhead Stadium. One of those games was the AFC Divisional playoff game. Obviously, Kansas City was victorious in both meetings. This matchup will pit two friends against each other at head coach, Andy Reid vs Doug Pederson. Meanwhile, Patrick Mahomes and Trevor Lawrence make for a tantalizing quarterback matchup.
Week 3: Vs Chicago Bears, Sunday, September 24th at 3:25 p.m. CT
There is not much of an expectation for the Chicago Bears. If anything, they at least need to show improvement of where they finished last year. Can Justin Fields take another step and remain healthy? What kind of tricks could this rebuilding team display against the Kansas City Chiefs?
Week 4: At New York Jets, Sunday, October 1st at 7:20 p.m. CT
The third time is the charm? We have been waiting for a Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers duel for some time. The two were scheduled to face off twice beforehand. In 2019, Mahomes missed the game against the Green Bay Packers with his freak knee injury. And then in 2021, Rodgers missed the game against the Chiefs, due to his positive COVID-test result. Just seeing two of the best quarterbacks in recent memory squaring off will be a tremendous treat on Sunday Night Football.
Week 5: At Minnesota Vikings, Sunday, October 8th at 3:25 p.m. CT
A rematch of Super Bowl IV. The Minnesota Vikings are coming off of one of the most improbable seasons in recent history. Quite possibly, a regression to the mean could occur for Minnesota this year, after so much luck in 2022. Either way, this is an opponent that the Chiefs cannot take lightly.
Week 6: Vs Denver Broncos, Thursday, October 12th at 7:15 p.m. CT
What will the Denver Broncos actually look like in 2023? 2022 was such a colossal failure. Honestly, most people may not even have a good idea of what the Broncos will look like. Surely, new head coach Sean Payton can elevate Denver a bit. Getting improved play from Russell Wilson and others on offense is still not guaranteed. And by the way, Kansas City has won 15 consecutive games over Denver. You have to go back to September 2015 for the last time the Broncos defeated the Chiefs.
Week 7: Vs Los Angeles Chargers, Sunday, October 22nd at 3:25 p.m. CT
Every game between Mahomes and Justin Herbert has been an instant classic. We have usually seen these matchups come down to the last minute of regulation. Perhaps, that occurs once again. What will the Chargers look like in 2023? They will still be dangerous. But, will their mentality change that much following the blown lead in last year’s Wild Card round?

Week 8: At Denver Broncos, Sunday, October 29th at 3:25 p.m. CT
Even with the daunting losing streak to the Chiefs, the Broncos seem to always play Kansas City tougher in Denver. Will that be the case again in 2023? The fact that the two division rivals play twice in just three weeks is interesting.
Week 9: Vs Miami Dolphins (From Frankfurt, Germany), Sunday, November 5th at 8:30 a.m. CT
The Chiefs were chosen as one of the teams to play a “home” game overseas as part of the NFL’s international series. Overall, that will take place in Frankfurt, Germany in early November. For many reasons, this should be an exciting matchup against the Miami Dolphins. Both teams were in the AFC playoffs last year. Both teams are driven by their respective offenses. Finally, this will be the first meeting between the Chiefs and the Dolphins since Kansas City traded Tyreek Hill to Miami.
Week 10: BYE WEEK
Week 11: Vs Philadelphia Eagles, Monday, November 20th at 7:15 p.m. CT
The rematch of last year’s Super Bowl. Another matchup between the Kelce brothers, Jason and Travis. Additionally, this will certainly be another top quarterback matchup on the Kansas City schedule. Mahomes was last year’s MVP. As for Jalen Hurts, he just received a shiny new contract extension after his impressive Super Bowl performance.
Week 12: At Las Vegas Raiders, Sunday, November 26th at 3:25 p.m. CT
Did the Las Vegas Raiders improve this offseason? If they did, it does not seem like they moved the needle much. However, changing starting quarterbacks for the first time in nearly a decade is monumental in itself. Jimmy Garoppolo will take over for the departing Derek Carr. More importantly, Garoppolo has previous experience with Raiders current head coach Josh McDaniels.
Week 13: At Green Bay Packers, Sunday, December 3rd at 7:20 p.m. CT
Another primetime game for the Kansas City Chiefs. In the last couple of meetings with the Packers, Kansas City and Green Bay have had exciting finishes. But now, it is Jordan Love‘s team at Lambeau Field. Will the Packers be good? Will they be average? No matter what, a matchup between them and the Chiefs should still be highly entertaining.
Week 14: Vs Buffalo Bills, Sunday, December 10th at 3:25 p.m. CT
As always in this current era of Chiefs football, any game against the Buffalo Bills is must-see television. Buffalo won at Kansas City in the regular season last year. In the end, these squads did not meet in last year’s playoffs. The Bills are still considered to be one of the top contenders in the AFC. Though, there is a bit more pressure and win-now urgency surrounding Buffalo in 2023. That is especially true after the finishes of Kansas City and the Cincinnati Bengals in the last few years.
Week 15: At New England Patriots, Monday, December 18th at 7:15 p.m. CT
This is not your father’s or brother’s New England Patriots, by any means. Can Bill Belichick continue to grind out wins with a lack of deep talent? Is Mac Jones able to get back on track in 2023? The Chiefs will be looking to avoid the trap that is a late-season trip to New England.
Week 16: Vs Las Vegas Raiders, Monday, December 25th at Noon CT
Home for the holidays (in Arrowhead Stadium) for the Kansas City Chiefs. A Christmas Day afternoon affair between two AFC West rivals. What more could you want as you spend Christmas with the family?
Week 17: Vs Cincinnati Bengals, Sunday, December 31st at 3:25 p.m. CT
There may be no better rivalry right now for teams that are not division rivals, than Kansas City and Cincinnati. After three consecutive losses to the Bengals, the Chiefs avenged some demons in last year’s AFC Championship Game, besting Cincinnati to advance to Super Bowl LVII. There will be instant fireworks and anxiousness from the time kickoff arrives, once again.
Week 18: At Los Angeles Chargers, Date and Time TBD
The Chiefs and the Chargers are likely the two best teams in the AFC West. Depending how the division standings sit going into this one, many playoff implications could be in play. What will that create between the two rivals?
