The Mets Are A .500 Ball Club At Best

The way the New York Mets are constructed, they are a .500 club at best. I’ve talked about Mets GM Billy Eppler failing in a lot of ways with the club and now his poor roster construction has come to the forefront. With the season slipping away, yes that’s possible in May, it makes you wonder if it can get any worse in Flushing. 

Justin Verlander May Be an Ordinary Pitcher 

Justin Verlander started the year out hurt. Considering he’s 40, that’s no surprise. But in the early going his fastball didn’t have a lot of zing and his one win was against the Cincinnati Reds, a glorified AAA roster. In his first home start, he got crushed by the Rays. He gave up six runs and eight hits and was partially booed when he left the game.  

Max Scherzer Not on Top of His Game 

Scherzer is 38 and is 3-2 with a 4.88 ERA and his velocity is down. His problem is home runs. He’s given up five already this season. His other problem is with his grip, or control because he’s given up 12 walks. He is giving up 3.9 walks per nine innings. That can’t continue. If both of the Mets aces have ordinary seasons they likely don’t make the playoffs and that would be considered a monumental failure. There could be a second book about the “Second worst team money can buy” but we’re not there yet. 

Dan Vogelbach Should be DFA’d 

Dan Vogelbach is another failed acquisition. Eppler was thrilled when he got him and boasted that they got him with another year, this year, and well that’s not good. It’s all backfired and at this point, he’s just hurting the team. Taking up a DH or pinch-hit spot. The Mets should bring up Mark Vientos (who has 12 home runs and 35 RBI in 136 at-bats in AAA). Keep him up and make him the full-time DH. That has been a black hole for the Mets for two years running. Most teams benefit from the DH spot, the Mets don’t and some of that falls on manager, Buck Showalter as well.

Showalter Is Too Loyal To the Veterans 

I’m not suggesting he needs to berate the players in full view of the press or rip them postgame, but a strong postgame message once in a while instead of trying to make up clever excuses isn’t cutting it. This is a team with expectations who are watching their season fritter away. Buck should be on the hot seat as well. If he can’t make the team accountable, Steven Cohen has to consider talking to Buck to lay the law down.
