Biggest Remaining Question For Each NFC East Team

It’s a group in which neither of the four teams that reside in it posted a losing record this past season. It’s a division that sent three different teams to the playoffs in 2022 and all won at least one postseason contest.

How competitive has the NFC East been this century? No team has won back-to-back division titles since the Philadelphia Eagles turned the trick four straight years from 2001-04. In each of the past three seasons, Washington (202), Dallas (2021) and Philadelphia (2022) have all taken turns grabbing the top spot in the division.

The Birds, Cowboys, Giants, and Commanders have done their due diligence to date this offseason in preparing for the 2023 NFL season. What questions remain for each of these clubs?

Philadelphia Eagles

Can new defensive coordinator Sean Desai fix the run defense?

Philadelphia’s 70 sacks in 17 games and eight more in the playoff wins vs. the Giants and 49ers didn’t mean much vs. the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII. The club was tied for 16th in the league in terms of run defense during the regular season. Sean Desai is the Eagles’ new defensive coordinator. Can 2023 first-round picks Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith have an immediate impact on the team’s front seven?

Dallas Cowboys

Will QB Dak Prescott bounce back from a disappointing season?

Dak Prescott had his issues this past season, especially when it came to throwing the ball to the other team. He missed five games during 2022 and only threw for 2,860 yards and 23 scores.  However, he tied for the NFL lead with a personal-high 15 interceptions. After throwing for four scores without a pick vs. the Buccaneers in the wild-card round, the 49ers stole two of Prescott’s passes in the divisional playoffs.

Is the team ready to compete with the rest of the NFC East?

This past season, the Giants returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2016. They won a postseason game for the first time since beating the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI in 2011. The team has struggled for years vs. the division and 2022 was no exception. Including a lopsided playoff loss at Philadelphia, Big Blue was 1-5-1 vs. their NFC East rivals. Three of those losses were to the Super Bowl-bound Eagles.

Can QB Sam Howell be a 17-game starter?

The last time a Washington quarterback started every game for the season for the team was 2017 when Kirk Cousins was still a member of the organization. That season, Washington finished 7-9 after posting consecutive winning campaigns. This season, head coach Ron Rivera is counting on second-year-pro Sam Howell, a fifth-round pick a year ago whose lone appearance in 2022 came in the season finale vs. Dallas.
