NFL 2023: Ranking The 5 Best Offseason Moves On The Offensive Line

In 2021, the Cincinnati Bengals reached Super Bowl LVI without a quality offensive line. Quarterback Joe Burrow took a beating that year. Including four postseason games, he was sacked a combined 70 times in 19 contests.

That’s all well and good but getting to the Super Bowl and winning the Super Bowl without a top-notch offensive front are two totally different stories. That’s why it’s essential for a team to be sound up front.

The following are the top five additions for teams that were looking to improve in the trenches. Some clubs need more work than others. These performers should make a big difference for their new clubs this season.

5. T Orlando Brown Jr., Bengals

Last offseason, the Bengals addressed its offensive line three times (C Ted Karras, G Alex Cappa and T La’el Collins) in free agency. However, the injury bug bit this unit and it wound up costing Zac Taylor’s club. This offseason, the team opted to sign four-time Pro Bowl tackle Orlando Brown Jr. who spent the past two seasons with the Chiefs and now has a Super Bowl ring. He’s not that far removed from the AFC North after beginning his career in Baltimore. Four-year pro Jonah Williams makes the move to right tackle.

4. G/T Peter Skoronski, Titans

It wasn’t too long ago that the Tennessee Titans invested first-round selections on talented tackles Taylor Lewan (2014) and Jack Conklin (2016). As the team approaches 2023, neither is no longer with the organization. Conklin left a few years ago for the Browns and Lewan was released by the Titans this offseason. Mike Vrabel’s club is coming off a 7-10 season in which the club dropped its final seven games. Versatile Peter Skoronski, a first-round pick from Northwestern, should upgrade the offensive front.

3. T Donovan Smith, Chiefs

The reigning Super Bowl champions got 20 starts each (including playoffs) from tackles Orlando Brown Jr. and Andrew Wylie in 2022. The former is now with the Cincinnati Bengals and the latter signed with the Washington Commanders this offseason. The club brought in tackle Jawaan Taylor, who started every game for the Jaguars over the past four seasons. However, the Chiefs also added eight-year pro Donovan Smith. He was let go by the Buccaneers this offseason and is slated to take over for Brown on the left side.

2. Mike McGlinchey, Broncos

After five seasons in the Bay Area, the ninth overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft opted to join the Broncos this offseason. Former Notre Dame standout Mike McGlinchey inked a five-year, $87.5 million deal to play for Sean Payton’s club. The one-time Golden Domer started every game for his team in three of his five seasons and also has six postseason starts on his resume, including an appearance in Super Bowl LIV. That should aid a Denver team that hasn’t been to the playoffs since winning Super Bowl 50 back in 2015.

1. G Isaac Seumalo, Steelers

Over the last few years, the Steelers have addressed their offensive line, which really fell apart during quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s last couple of seasons. This year, new general manager Omar Khan grabbed former Eagles right guard Isaac Seumalo and also move up three spots in the draft, thanks to the Patriots, to select University of Georgia tackle Roderick Jones. Seumalo spent seven seasons with the Birds and was part of two Super Bowl teams in Philadelphia. He will add some power to the ground game.
