Expect more from Nick Chubb in Browns passing attack

The abilities of Nick Chubb as a runner of the football are not exactly a secret. Considered the best running back in all of football, it appears that Chubb will have some added responsibilities this season.

When asked about the offensive schematic changes, Mary Kay Cabot said that the Browns are evolving their use of Chubb. Specifically mentioning how to get the most out of Chubb with Deshaun Watson.

“The blocking schemes will change some to accommodate Watson’s mobility and designed runs, but Nick Chubb and the zone blocking schemes will still be a big part of the offense. The Browns recognize that Chubb is a huge part of the offense, and that’s not changing anytime soon. This is still the AFC North, and there’s still weather to contend with in November and December.

A strong running game will also support Watson’s more explosive passing game. In addition, Chubb will be used more as a receiver out of the backfield, so his touches might evolve, but he’ll get them.”

Nick Chubb has not been used much as a receiver up to this point in his career. Chubb has just 119 receptions for 990 yards and four touchdowns through 75 games. There were various factors at play which ultimately led to this being an underutilized part of his skillset. From the worst head coach of all-time on the sideline, an underwhelming first overall pick at quarterback, and the presence of the now departed Kareem Hunt. All of these contributed to Chubb seeing less action as a receiver.

Utilizing Chubb as an active participant in the passing game is a must. As incredibly effective as handing the ball off to Chubb can be, that is not why Watson is here. The expectation is for Watson to be at minimum at Top-10 quarterback, if not Top-5. The way to get him into that range is for him to throw the football and that includes using Chubb as a receiver.

While it is exciting to see a new dimension of Chubb’s game, the team must exercise caution. These are different types of collisions that can be quite jarring. Getting hit while ramping up to speed through the offensive line is vastly different than getting hit full speed while going out for a pass. This type of high speed impact can lead to serious injury and losing an integral player in Chubb is not something that anyone can afford.
