2023 NFL Preview: Coordinators To Watch -

In 2023, four particular NFL assistants stand to gain what they’ve worked their entire lives for: an NFL head coaching job.

The Chosen One

Now, with all due respect to predecessors, no other recent Belichick protégé can boast a resume like Jerod Mayo’s. First, Belichick selected Mayo with the tenth pick of the 2008 NFL Draft. From that point on, Mayo became the unquestioned leader of the New England defense. While injuries forced an early retirement, Mayo took up the mantle of responsibility of being an assistant. Now, if anyone knows how the Patriots run, understand that team runs like a well-oiled machine. With said apparatus, Mayo earned praise for his meticulous nature and the ability to articulate a game plan. For clarity, look at the work he’s accomplished with Jahlani Tavai and Ja’Whaun Bentley. Neither entered the NFL highly touted but excels within the scheme. Mayo earned Belichick’s trust, which remains the highest compliment. Now, could he take over when/if the hooded one retires?

Motor City Magician

Now, raise your hand if you give Dan Campbell the lion’s share of the credit for an improved Lions team? At the same, give a hat tip to Ben Johnson. With an unexciting roster on paper, Johnson crafted an excellent NFL offense. Instead of a who’s who, Detroit employed a ” who’s that” strategy. Regardless of the names on the back of the jerseys, Johnson guided the Lions to the fifth-most point in 2022. As a result, general managers should watch Johnson and his encore in 2022. While he could be a year or two off, watching the Detroit Lions enjoy their best offensive showing since 2011 means a great deal to future employers. Detroit’s six yards after completion ranked fourth. In other words, Johnson would test defenses vertically with unbroken confidence. This fall, can he repeat that feat? More importantly, where does he land in 2024?

The Miracle Worker

When Shane Waldron accepted the offensive coordinator job in Seattle two years ago, two quarterbacks sat in front of him. First, journeyman Geno Smith and Drew Lock. Immediately, Waldron went to work. Basically, he embraced his former boss, Sean McVay. Notably, the ability to create misdirection, keeping the offense flowing horizontally. Smith threw for a team-record 4,282 yards at a 69.7 percent clip. Seattle made its championship bones on defense. If they want to return to those heights, Waldron needs to replicate 2022. If he does, his phone will ring off the hook until he chooses to answer.

What’s The Problem?

Eric Bieniemy sits without an NFL head coaching job. After two Super Bowl appearances and a title, the man sits in his office in Washington Why? At this point, that question needs serious investigation. After watching less talented coordinators receive join offers only to catch a pink slip. More importantly, Bieniemy needed to leave Kansas City and take the coordinator job in DC. If you read some of the reasons. None make sense. They cite poor interviews and a troubled past. Yet, in the past few years, other assistants ran afoul of the law more than a few times. In April 2001, Bieniemy was cited for driving under the influence. However, did some NFL teams use this as a reason to not hire him?
