Browns finally move on from Perrion Winfrey

The Cleveland Browns have finally reached their breaking point when it comes to defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey, releasing the 22-year old defensive tackle after yet another incident. Winfrey allegedly yelled and threatened a woman Tuesday in Downtown Cleveland according to reports. The report also mentions that Winfrey showed a gun which resulted in two women involved to exit the building. Winfrey has not been arrested or charged at this time.

This was a much overdue decision by the Browns front office as Perrion Winfrey has shown time and time again that this is behavior that he does not wish to change. 

Winfrey was in the dog house last season due to “maturity issues and subsequently ended up on the bench. These issues went beyond the field as Winfrey was in legal trouble not too long ago. Winfrey was arrested back in April for misdemeanor assault of a woman in Texas, with the charges ultimately being dropped. The team had continued to stick by Winfrey per Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. Now it appears that this latest incident was the last straw for the decision makers in Berea.

The reality is that Cleveland should have moved on from Winfrey after the previous incident. The dropping of charges should not have played a factor in their decision making process. There comes a point where the cons outweigh the pros of hanging on to a player like Winfrey and that was a long time ago.

This series of events should not alter how the team approaches the interior of their defensive line. While there was hope Winfrey could have been a contributor of some sort, he was never going to dethrone a starter. Dalvin Tomlinson and Jordan Elliott are the clear starters inside for Cleveland. The Browns currently have Tommy Togiai, Maurice Hurst, Trysten Hill, and Siaki Ika as potential options to back up their primary defensive tackles. Cleveland can still go out an acquire another option, but this does not need to be a priority.
