Browns should consider trading Donovan Peoples-Jones

This is not a popular opinion. In fact, it is far from it. But should a team come to the Cleveland Browns and inquire about trading for Donovan Peoples-Jones they should seriously consider it.

There are multiple factors at play as to why this should be an option for Cleveland.

The Browns brought in several receivers this offseason

It has been mentioned several times before, but the Browns traded for Elijah Moore and drafted Cedric Tillman. There is also the presence of Amari Cooper and 2022 third-round pick David Bell on the roster. Even though the Browns are looking to win this season and the future of Cooper beyond this season is fairly questionable, moving Peoples-Jones should still be an option that is on the table. This would fall into the concept of marrying short-term success with long-term flexibility.

Donovan Peoples-Jones may not equal his 2022 performance

This is a subject that has been brought up previously. There is the possibility that Donovan Peoples-Jones has trouble repeating his 2022 campaign. The former Michigan Wolverine was solid with 61 receptions for 839 yards and three touchdowns, but this is hardly the performance of top-tier wideouts. Considering the limitations of Peoples-Jones as a receiver in addition to the weapons brought into Cleveland, it would not be a shock to see his production drop in 2023.

Donovan Peoples-Jones contract

This is the final year of Donovan Peoples-Jones’ rookie deal and up to this point there have been exactly zero reported conversations about a possible extension. To say that this screams potential trade candidate is an understatement. Teams are always willing to take chances on players on expiring contracts such as this. If a team finds itself in need of a target in the passing game who will not break the bank, Peoples-Jones could be an option.

What is the likelihood of a trade?

Keeping in mind that there have not been any substantial trade rumors involving Peoples-Jones, not likely. But if an acceptable trade package comes along that could change rather quickly. The Browns must understand how to properly navigate situations like this, an area which they have struggled in previously. A trade of a player with a redundant skill set such as Peoples-Jones could lead to better decision making in the future. That is if those in charge are still here at season’s end.
