NFL Opinion: Three Veterans That Could Receive Releases -

The dog days of the NFL summer not only brings heat, but the pressure to win jobs. Former first-rounders are not immune.

As mentioned, here, and thousands of other places, the NFL Draft is not an exact science. Yet, when the camera fades and the cleats slide on, the immense pressure for first-round draft picks increases. Granted, teams drafted these players to play pivotal roles in the construction of their team. However, more often than not, many first round draft picks fail to contribute to match that draft status. With that said, the NFL summer of 2023 will once again show how inexact draft science is.

Jalen Reagor

Imagine you’re a human highlight film in college. Defenses failed to contain you while you made history on Saturday. This happened to Jalen Reagor. Then, the NFL reality took hold. When the Eagles drafted him twenty-first overall in 2020, the former TCU standout. they expected a playmaker. Nevertheless, Reagor struggled to live up to his pre-draft hype. Despite one shining moment of this punt return, Reagor never caught fire. Instead, he totaled seventy- two catches and four touchdowns. After being shipped to Minnesota, Reagor hoped to reinvigorate his stalled career. Eight catches and seventeen games later, Reagor finds himself clinging to a fourth or fifth wide receiver spot. He will not crack the top-three of the Vikings’ receiver chart. He needs a monster summer to keep his job.

Javon Kinlaw

If you want to look at Javon Kinlaw’s NFL highlights travel back to November 15, 2020. In a game versus the Saints, the South Carolina product destroyed the interior to the tune of a sack-and-a-half. Before or since that day, Kinlaw has not tallied a single sack. In thirty-six days, he celebrates his twenty-sixth birthday. While still young by NFL and any other metric, Kinlaw possesses youth on his side. Yet, roster depth does not bode well for him. The 49ers added Clelin Ferrell and Kerry Hyder. Now, Hyder and Ferrell ply their trade as end. However, they both demonstrate the ability to kick inside to defensive tackle. By picking him fourteenth overall in 2020, San Francisco started the clock for a player that does not show consistency. Under those circumstances, Javon Kinlaw could head out of Santa Clara.

Caleb Farley

With some people minimizing the worth of lower NFL first-round picks, the selection of Caleb Farley flies under the radar. In Farley, the Titans expected another in Virginia Tech’s legacy of cornerbacks. Blessed with size and speed, Farley, when healthy in Blacksburg, looks the part. Unfortunately, the injury bug continues to bite him. In two seasons, Farley started two games, missing extensive time with knee and back injuries. With Tennessee seemingly moved on, Farley, still only twenty-four, recaptured the starting spot in Tennessee. In a phrase, possible but highly unlikely. With Kristian Fulton working the outside with Sean Murphy-Bunting, Farley could try the slot. However, second-year pro Roger McCreery stands in his way.
