The Chicago Bears have stumbled out of the block this season. As they continue to lose, the team cannot afford to sit still and do nothing.
After the Chicago Bears spent most of their nearly $100 million in salary cap space, trading the top pick of the draft for more picks and an elite wide receiver, and using ten draft selections, no one expected to see them stumble out of the block this season.
No rational fan expected the Bears to be Super Bowl contenders. However, no one expected them to start out 0-3 and look like the same team that struggled the last few seasons. In fact, one could argue that this team is worse than the one fielded last season.
Last season’s team had a lack of talent all over the roster. People expected that team to struggle. This team has a lot more talent yet is losing games by wider margins than last season. In fact, over the last six losses dating back to last season, the Bears have been outscored 211-81.
This team is collapsing and falling into depths that we’ve never seen before. The Bears are looking worse each week. At least for most of last season, the team competed. The Bears had eight games that finished within one score. They also had a few that were one-score games late in games before the opponents pulled away.
So far this season, it’s been blowout after blowout. The latest one was to the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, 41-10.
After finishing the first quarter trailing just 7-0, the Bears gave up 27 points to the Chiefs in the second quarter to seal their fate. After that, it was just a prolonged wait for the game to end.
The Bears are a mess on and off the field
In addition to the on-field mess, the Chicago Bears are also a mess off the field. Quarterback Justin Fields made headlines after he insinuated that coaching might be responsible for him looking robotic this season. That happened despite him clarifying it in his next sentence and then again after the press conference.
Then there was the saga of defensive coordinator Alan Williams. He did something that required him to resign his position. Was it criminal? No one is saying, but at the very least we found out that he did something bad.
Then there was the curious case (that no one explained) of Nathan Peterman. In the middle of all of the mess going on, the Bears cut him. However, they re-signed him the next day.
Oh, and let’s not forget that someone broke into the facility and stole about $100,000 worth of equipment.
There is a lot going on with the Chicago Bears, and none of it is good. They’ve gone from a proud franchise to irrelevant to now a laughingstock of the NFL.
The Bears cannot afford to sit still while everything collapses
Chicago Bears ownership usually lets the season progress before they start firing people. In this case, things should be different.

Ep 162: Joe Flacco, Dak Prescott and The MVP, Week 13 Discussion
by Full Press Coverage on December 3, 2023 at 3:58 pm
With the other teams, there was a lack of talent on the team. Yes, those teams were a mess, but we were expecting that mess. It wasn’t like replacing coaches mid-season was going to cause a turnaround.
This team is actually more talented and deeper. With a more talented roster this year compared to last season, why have the Bears taken a bigger beating in 2023?
While the roster got better, the coaching staff remained the same.
The Chicago Bears have to do something. The Chairman of the team, George McCaskey, is said to be upset about what is happening. We hear the same thing year in and year out. Instead of waiting to see how the dumpster fire ends up, he should do something.
McCaskey needs to have a meeting with general manager Ryan Poles, along with team president and CEO Kevin Warren. The brain trust has to come up with some solution.
Do they decide to fire the head coach?
Ultimately, the head coach is responsible for what happens on the field. Head coach Matt Eberflus could be the fall guy, whether it is warranted or not.
There is something going on between Fields and offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. Perhaps what Fields said at the press conference was his frustration boiling over.
Getsy seems to be trying to take away everything that made Fields a dynamic player. Fields isn’t a pocket quarterback. He does better when he is on the move — a rolling pocket where he can opt to use his legs or throw.
Running the ball is what kept opposing defenses off-balanced last season. If opponents try to stop him he could find an open receiver. A lot of times, even when they keyed in on stopping him he was too fast and just broke loose.
The runs aren’t in the playbook anymore. We understand that the Bears don’t want Fields to run as much as he did last year, but to throw out all the pages of runs is malpractice.
Eberflus has to take control and find a happy medium. He has to come up with something that both parties can accept. Also, now that he is calling the plays on defense, we need to see an improvement.
One of Williams’ problems was his inability to make mid-game adjustments. Opponents just killed the Bears with the same plays. Eberflus has to change that. He was a defensive coordinator with the Indianapolis Colts and was successful so he can do it.
If Eberflus is unable to turn things around quickly then a change has to be made. It doesn’t matter if it is mid-season. The Bears weren’t going to contend anyway. The problem is that they look hapless and uninspired.
There is a critical game coming up next week. The Bears host the Denver Broncos. The Broncos are just as bad as Chicago. They are also 0-3. They played the Miami Dolphins in Week 3 and gave up a whopping 70 pointsso they have their own problems.
If the Bears lose to the Broncos then it could be a while before they have an opportunity to win a game. It might not be until Week 10 when they play the Carolina Panthers before they have a decent chance at winning. If it gets that bad, then Eberflus and others should not stay in their positions throughout the season.
