Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt has gotten off to a hot start in 2023, accumulating six sacks in just three games. Two of these games have been multi-sack performances, with 3 in Week 1 and 2 in Week 3. This has resulted in Watt being named AFC Defensive Player of the Month for September.

It is not just the sacks that have resulted in the talented Steelers’ defender being awarded with his honor. Watt has 12 quarterback hits, five tackles for loss, two pass defenses, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries, in addition to the game-winning defensive touchdown in Week 2’s 26-22 victory over the Cleveland Browns.
Watt should continue to be a difference-maker for the Steelers defense. The former Wisconsin Badger has proven time and time again that he is one of the elite defensive players in the league. It would not be a surprise to see Watt end up with another Top 3 finish in AFC Defensive Player of the Year voting at season’s end, if not win it outright. Getting off to this kind of start should certainly propel Watt as an early frontrunner for the award. Expect more monthly awards while continuing to be an anchor for Pittsburgh’s defense.
