The NFL trade deadline has come and gone as we cross the halfway point of the 2023 season for most teams.
We saw a couple of big trades on deadline day, including the Commanders trading a pair of defensive stars. First, they sent Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears and then followed that up by sending former second-overall pick Chase Young to the San Francisco 49ers.
Now that the deadline has passed, we can look toward the 2024 offseason and with that, a couple of rumors focusing on the future of one coach and one player that could have been dealt last week.
Bill Belichick – Could the Patriots head coach find himself the subject of trade talk in the offseason?
Rumor: According to Mike Florio, there is some “chatter” that the Washington Commanders could try and trade for Bill Belichick in the offseason.
Well, that is an interesting nugget. How much truth is involved remains to be seen.
Bill Belichick has been in the crossfire this season as the Patriots have struggled to a 2-6 start, the worst in the Belichick era. The six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach reportedly signed a multi-year extension in the offseason and at 71 years old, it seems very unlikely that he would want to pick up and start over with another franchise. However, at 300 career wins as a head coach, he is 16 wins short of Don Shula and 17 from passing him for most of all time. It has long been suggested that Belichick wants to pass Shula. At this rate, averaging about seven wins a season (not including 2023) in the three seasons since Tom Brady left, it would take Belichick a few more seasons to do that. With that said, the Patriots are also a team with an exorbitant amount of cap space this offseason, so a quick reload and retool is not out of the question. Does Robert Kraft really want to bring in an entirely new regime during a crucial offseason? We’ll see.

Davante Adams – Was the All-Pro receiver almost reunited with Aaron Rodgers in New York?
Rumor: According to Brian Costello, the Jets reached out to both the Raiders and Bucs about the availability of Davante Adams and Mike Evans but were rebuffed by both.
“The Jets did not trade any of their players or acquire anyone in a trade, letting the deadline pass. It was not because general manager Joe Douglas did not try. Douglas inquired about wide receivers like Davante Adams and Mike Evans, but the Raiders and Buccaneers were not willing to trade them”
Despite Aaron Rodgers playing only a handful of snaps this season, the Jets are very much in the playoff mix this season and a nice run in the second half would surely help their case so it makes sense that they would approach a team like the Raiders about Adams who seemed unhappy following his one-catch game a week ago. At the deadline, the Raiders seemed uninterested in moving on from Adams, despite his limited use the previous four weeks; however, that regime is gone as the Raiders have moved on from head coach Josh McDaniels. Would the Jets try to reengage the Raiders in the offseason in an attempt to have that Rodgers-Adams reunion? It really depends on how the rest of the Raiders season plays out, with Antonio Pierce as the interim head coach and Aiden O’Connell getting his first snaps under center as Jimmy Garoppolo makes his way to the bench.
Montez Sweat – New Bears defensive lineman is free agent at season’s end, will Bears seek long-term deal?
Rumor: According to Dan Graziano, the Bears will attempt to sign newly-acquired Montez Sweat to long-term deal before season’s end.
Sweat, the former Commander, was surpringsliny moved to the Bears, a team with futile playoff hopes for 2023. However, Chicago is clearly planning for the future and hope that Sweat’s future is with the team after surrendering a second-round pick to get him. It would obviously be the wise decision considering Sweat’s 6.5 sacks this season are nearly the total for the entire Bears team in 2023. The former first round pick has been a consistent producer since coming into the league in 2019, evident by his 35.5 career sacks. The Bears will have a lot of questions to answer in the offseason, they just hope it won’t be whether or not Sweat will return.
