Can The Rockets Beat The Warriors Without Chris Paul?

May 24, 2018; Houston, TX, USA; Houston Rockets guard Chris Paul (3) is guarded by Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson (11) and center Jordan Bell (2) in game five of the Western conference finals of the 2018 NBA Playoffs at Toyota Center. Mandatory Credit: Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports
After taking a critical 3-2 lead over the juggernaut Warriors, the Rockets looked to be the first team to dethrone the Warriors in four seasons. Why would the Oklahoma City Thunder pay Russell Westbrook $205 million over the next five years if Paul George leaves?   Why be willing to pay $250 million to $300 million for a roster that doesn't scream "title contender" if he stays? Well, it has to do with one thing: Relevance.

How The Rockets Can Do The Impossible

It has been a dream season for the Rockets. Splash offseason acquisition Chris Paul majorly panned out exactly as they had hoped, Harden looks to be a sure lock for MVP after too many years of spiteful snubs, and with the timely emergence of Clint Capela, they ripped the first seed in the West right out of the reigning champions injury-riddled hands.

This 1-8 matchup sees two teams who had lofty expectations. One team silenced all of their critics, dominating the NBA. They proved to the league that they are the best team in the NBA. The other team barely squeaked into the playoffs on the back of Taj Gibson and some bad Mike Malone playcalling.

The 3-6 matchup in the west looks to be one of the tightest and most entertaining in the NBA. Here, we have two teams that before the All-Star break were firmly in the thick of the Western Conference playoff race. The Blazers sat at 27-24 and the Pelicans sat 28-23. After the All-Star break, both of these teams proved that they were not like the rest in the West. Both teams went on big win streaks.
