Vikings Preview: Week Six vs. Cardinals

David Johnson is the engine of the Cardinal offense. Much like the Rams with Todd Gurley, Arizona uses Johnson in every facet: as a runner, on screens, as a receiver in the red zone, everything. The Viking linebackers struggled to contain Gurley in week four, and the Eagles similarly found mismatches with their running backs on Barr and Kendricks. Expect much of the same from Arizona. Also, because of this, the possibility exists that the Vikings utilize their safeties in more linebacker-esque coverage roles.

Keys to a Vikings Victory Against the Cardinals

Arizona may appear to be a bottom-feeder in the NFC. But they are coming off a solid win over a division rival and they have new life with their rookie quarterback. On top of that, the last time the Vikings had a supposed easy win, they had the doors blown off by Buffalo. Nothing is a given in the NFL, especially with top contenders.

Transcript from Zimmer’s Week Six Presser

Mike Zimmer met the media Wednesday ahead of the Vikings' week six matchup with the Arizona Cardinals. The following questions and answers are unedited, but some are rearranged for relevance purposes and others are omitted due to short answers. To read the presser in its entirety, follow this link.

DeFilippo Playing to Vikings’ Strengths, Masking Weaknesses

So the Vikings did not exactly build up a stout line this offseason, and that is certainly costing the Vikings in the running game. But in the passing game, offensive coordinator John DeFilippo is hammering home the schemes that have blossomed from Bill Walsh out to Andy Reid and Doug Pederson while also incorporating the spacing elements of modern spread offenses. It essentially comes down to a few key features:

Mike Priefer’s Lackluster History with Kickers

Mike Priefer is a mainstay on the Vikings' coaching staff. He has been the special teams coordinator since 2011 and even served as interim coach when Mike Zimmer's eye troubles kept him away from the team a couple years ago. Priefer is seemingly held in high regard from most everyone in that facility.

Vikings Avenge NFCCG Loss: Three Up, Three Down

Winning ugly is code for a good defensive win, and that is exactly what the Vikings pulled out Sunday. The offense was just good enough to make things happen, while the defense returned to more of their 2017 form.

Key Matchups for Week Five Vikings at Eagles

After two consecutive losses, the Vikings travel to Philadelphia for a game with the defending champions.  Let’s take a look at some of the key matchups for week three.

Charting Cousins: Week 4 Vikings @ Rams

In week four, the Vikings faced one of the best teams in the NFL. Cousins and the offense tried to match the high-powered Rams offense but came up a little short. For Cousins specifically, he performed extremely well against pressure until another fumble from backside pressure ended the comeback attempt.

Anthony Barr vs. Rams: How McVay Killed the Vikings

After Thursday night's game, Anthony Barr was the butt of every joke, the symbol of the Vikings fan's discontent with the first four weeks of the season. His lack of an extension was viewed as a godsend as he surrendered three touchdowns against the Rams. However, many fans were quick to shift the blame from Barr to Mike Zimmer, given that two of the touchdowns were the result of defending receivers. Which is a fair point. However, Rams coach Sean McVay clearly made a point of targeting the Viking linebackers in pass coverage and creating mismatches with them.
