Three teams in the NFC, the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Detroit Lions, are headed to the playoffs. The Niners are division champions for the second straight year. In the AFC, only the Baltimore Ravens have wrapped up a postseason invitation. A lot can change by the end of Week 16.
Here are five more statistics that may grab your attention. It’s the second straight week the league will have games on Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
Merry Christmas!

It has been 30 years since the Detroit Lions won a division title. The year was 1993, the head coach was Wayne Fontes and the setting was the five-team NFC Central. Detroit finished 10-6 that season but would lose at home to the Packers in the wild-card round. A victory at Minnesota on Sunday and the playoff-bound Lions will wrap up the NFC North. Dan Campbell’s club is an impressive 5-2 on the road this season.

This Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys are facing an AFC East team on the road for the second straight week. The club hopes to fare better than they did at Buffalo last Sunday. The team was on the wrong end of a 31-10 score. Of course, a lopsided final has been the norm for Mike McCarthy’s club. All told, 11 of the team’s 14 games have been decided by double digits – eight wins by Dallas, as well as three defeats.

This season, the NFL will feature three games on Christmas. There’s a clash of 11-3 teams when the 49ers host the Ravens. There are two divisional clashes as the Chiefs welcome the Raiders to Kansas City and the Eagles take on the Giants. If Chiefs and Christmas sounds familiar, the team’s 27-24 double overtime loss to the Dolphins in the 1971 AFC Divisional Playoffs is still the longest game in NFL history.

The Philadelphia Eagles and Jacksonville Jaguars are in the midst of three-game skids. That’s proving to be not so surprising this year when it comes to defending divisional champions. The AFC East’s Buffalo Bills and AFC West’s Kansas City Chiefs are the two teams that finished in first place a season ago and haven’t suffered through a three-game skid. However, both clubs have lost more games than they did in 2022.

It’s the number of sacks allowed by the New York Giants this season and that’s in just 14 games. It is the third-highest total of QB traps allowed by a team in NFL annals, set by the 2002 Houston Texans during their first year of existence, and all of those sacks at the expense of David Carr. The NFL record for sacks surrendered in a season is a mind-boggling 104, courtesy of Buddy Ryan’s Philadelphia Eagles in 1986.
