A total of 272 regular-season contests, followed by a dozen postseason encounters. Now comes NFL Game No. 285. Kyle Shanahan’s NFC West champions and Andy Reid’s AFC West titleholders are back where they were in 2019 – squaring off against each other on Super Bowl Sunday. It’s the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs on Super Bowl Sunday for the second time.
A look at the numbers when it comes to the history of this storied 57-game series.

There was a time when they were the only franchise in the NFL to have five Super Bowl titles. The San Francisco 49ers won four Lombardi Trophies in a nine-year span in the 1980s. They set a new mark with their 49-26 victory over the Chargers in XXIX. Since then, the Pittsburgh Steelers added to their total from the 1970s, and the New England won six championships from 2001-18, They are the co-owners of the record for most Super Bowl titles, a mark the Niners can tie with a victory over Kansas City on Sunday.

A very relevant Brock Purdy will be the 67th different quarterback to start a Super Bowl. He will also be the San Francisco 49ers’ fifth different signal-caller on Super Sunday. He joins Joe Montana (4-0), Steve Young (1-0), Colin Kaepernick (0-1) and Jimmy Garoppolo (0-1). Meanwhile, Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes will be starting his fourth Super Bowl in five years. He’s the eight different quarterback to start at least four Super Bowls. That prestigious list is led by seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady (10).

There have been 57 Super Bowls played to date, and on 32 occasions, the quarterback has been named the game’s Most Valuable Player. As for the other positions, there’s a wide receiver (8), running back (7), linebacker (4), defensive back (3), defensive lineman (2), and one kick returner (Green Bay’s Desmond Howard in XXXI). The Chiefs and 49ers ranked second and third in the NFL in points allowed. Could we see the first defensive player to capture Super Bowl MVP honors since Denver linebacker Von Miller (50)?

Back to the MVP talk. There has never been an offensive lineman nor a punter nor a placekicker named the Super Bowl’s Most Valuable Player. Meanwhile, the only skill position not to be recognized in this aspect is tight end. There have been some impressive reception totals, and Cincinnati’s Dan Ross owns the Super Bowl record for catches by tight end (11), set against the 49ers (XVI). Kansas City’s Travis Kelce, the NFL’s all-time postseason receptions leader (156), and the Niners’ George Kittle are worthy candidates.

It remains one of the more astounding numbers when it comes to Super Bowl statistics. There has been a total of 57 champions, and those teams have combined for a mere 64 turnovers on Super Bowl Sunday (7 of those by the champion Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl V). On the other hand, bad ball security has been the thing that has hurt a team from winning a Lombardi Trophy. All told, the 57 losing squads in the Super Bowl have combined for exactly 100 more turnovers (164) than the teams that defeated them. Amazing.
