Houston’s D’Eriq King is in the midst of an incredible season that hardly anyone is talking about. The 5-11 junior quarterback from Manvel, TX has led Houston to a 7-3 record, despite the nations 121st ranked defense that he has to overcome every week. The college football world needs to pay attention to D’Eriq King. Here is why.
Pay Attention to D’Eriq King
Background
King came to Houston as a four-star recruit. In fact, he was rated as the 31st best player in the state of Texas. He incredibly finished his career at Manvel High School with over 10,000 passing yards and more than 3,000 rushing yards! King chose to stay home in the Houston area, choosing the Cougars over Baylor, Clemson, Michigan State, and others.
What sets King apart
D’Eriq King started his career at Houston as a wide receiver, despite playing quarterback in high school. He was viewed as an athlete that played quarterback, rather than a quarterback who is an incredible athlete. However, King has proven that he is certainly the latter over the last couple of seasons. What sets him apart is his speed and previously mentioned athleticism. King has impressive touch on his deep throws while also possessing solid arm strength. Of course, he could improve on his intermediate throws, however, he has been solid overall there as well. His productivity speaks for itself. Houston should have played him at quarterback all along rather than wasting time attempting to make him a wide receiver/athlete.

Heisman contender?
D’Eriq King should absolutely be in the Heisman discussion. As mentioned previously, consider that he is having to overcome the nations 121st ranked defense every single week. Through 10 games, he has completed 63 percent of his passes for 2,900 yards along with 35 touchdowns. The most impressive part of King’s numbers is the fact that he only has six interceptions out of 330 pass attempts. Additionally, he uses his incredible speed on the ground. So far this season he has rushed 101 times for 592 yards with 13 touchdowns. D’Eriq King has created a whopping 48 touchdowns in 10 games, which is astonishing. Impressively, his 3,492 total yards ranks fifth in the nation while his 48 touchdowns rank first.
Final plea
Seriously, pay attention to D’Eriq King. His Houston Cougars play at home against Tulane on Thursday while finishing the season at Memphis on November 23rd. Those are two great opportunities to watch him play. You might want to look away when the defense is playing though.
