With the No. 246 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins have selected all-around offensive player Malcolm Perry. He played quarterback, running back and wide receiver for the United States Naval Academy.
Who is Malcolm Perry?
Perry attended the United States Naval Academy for all four years of his college tenure and produced most of his statistics from running the ball. He was the American Athletic Conference’s Offensive Player-of-the-Year in 2019.
Navy is one of the few teams that runs the triple option, meaning the team runs the ball on almost every possession, every down. This scheme set up Perry’s astonishing 4,359 career yards, with 2,017 of those yards coming last season. Perry’s total was good enough to pass Jordan Lynch’s record for the most rushing yards by a quarterback in a season. He also reached the 40-marker, scoring 40 total touchdowns.
What Can Perry’s Role Be For Miami?
It’s likely no one in Miami expects Perry to win the starting job going into this season, the possible positions he can play for the Dolphins is endless.

New offensive coordinator Chan Gailey and head coach Brian Flores could consider using Perry the same way the New Orleans Saints use QBs Drew Brees and Taysom Hill. His versatility though will allow him to line up as a rusher, receiver, fullback and even as a special teams player. With his offensive versatility, he no doubt can be a useful red zone target.
Perry should be able to go in and compete for a roster spot. He’ll have to showcase his talents at multiple positions in a short time however if he wants to make the 53-man roster cut.
