The often forgotten quarterback in the room, Jarrett Stidham, has undergone successful back surgery according to Ian Rapoport.
#Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham underwent successful surgery on Wednesday to repair a back injury, sources say. Stidham should be able to return in roughly 12 weeks or so, as the procedure was not season-ending.

Stidham has spent the start of Patriots training camp on the PUP list. In addition, the team recently added Jake Dolegala off waivers from the Green Bay Packers and now we know why. Rapoport added that Stidham could miss up to 12 weeks which would bring us through training camp and the preseason and well into the start of the regular season.

Now, Stidham was unlikely in a position to compete for the starting role with both Cam Newton and first-rounder Mac Jones on the roster, however, he could have had a chance to earn the backup spot behind Newton, who is the presumed started. That, obviously, will not happen. This also likely increases the odds that Brian Hoyer is on the roster come week one.

Stidham, the former Auburn product, has seen limited action during his first two seasons in the NFL
Of course, his rookie season he spent behind Tom Brady, and last year, he was often the third quarterback behind Newton and Hoyer. To that end, Stidham has just 48 pass attempts across two seasons for 270 yards, two touchdowns, and four interceptions. The former fourth-round pick still has two years remaining on his rookie contract and what little shot he had to compete is likely over this season. Newton is signed for just 2021 and if Jones takes the reigns this year or next, there could be room for Stidham on the roster in 2022.
The Patriots kick off the season on September 12th at home against the Miami Dolphins.
