Welcome to another edition of Full Press Hockey’s NHL Rumors! The NHL Draft is history, and every team has high hopes for the prospects they added. Now, we turn to free agency and rumors abound. Clubs are always working to improve their rosters for next season. In this Sunday edition of NHL Rumors, we will take a look at the Carolina Hurricanes, Colorado Avalanche, and the Dallas Stars.
Carolina Hurricanes – Brent Burns
Rumor: Per – Elliotte Friedman – sportsnet.ca. On his latest 32 Thoughts podcast, Friedman stated, “Burns wanted to go to Dallas but okayed a deal to Carolina. Thinks Nashville and Florida tried to trade for him but chose Carolina.”
Brent Burns was in the rumors leading up to free agent frenzy day, and it was a surprise to some degree to see him traded. He is 37 years old, and still has three years remaining on his contract. Carolina was able to convince the San Jose Sharks to retain one-third of his contract, leaving the ‘Canes with the remaining $5.28 million per year for three years. It seems that Carolina in losing out of keeping offensive minded blueliner Anthony DeAngelo wanted to fill that role again and Burns is the perfect candidate.
Dallas was interested in Burns since they know they will lose John Klingberg. The Nashville Predators were certainly intrigued by having Roman Josi and Burns out on their blueline to baffle opposing teams. And, don’t forget that they recently added Ryan McDonagh too. Florida may have been in on Burns, but had no cap space to make it happen unless other contracts were sent elsewhere.
In the end, Burns will fit in nicely in Carolina. He has 227 career goals, and 550 assists. His power-play stats will surely help Carolina too. He had 80 goals and 196 assists.
Colorado Avalanche – Nazem Kadri
Rumor: Per – Elliotte Friedman – sportsnet.ca. On his latest 32 Thoughts podcast, Friedman stated, “There were some reports put there that Calgary was making Kadri a mega offer, I don’t think that’s the case, at least not as I do this on Friday morning. I think the Flames and Kadri have talked, I think the Flames are trying to be careful..”
Kadri knows he’s going to receive a well-deserved contract after his phenomenal 2021-22 season. He registered 28 goals and 59 assists in 71 games. Kadri was especially skilled on the power play where he collected eight goals and 21 assists. That means he was involved in 43 percent of the Avalanche extra strength tallies. Pretty impressive. And, that is why teams who have the cap space are looking to add the high scoring forward to their roster.

With the Flames losing the Johnny Gaudreau sweepstakes, they have $18.5 million left to work with towards getting a Kadri offer in place. While the Flames don’t wish to get “burned” twice, they should go after Kadri. Losing the offensively talented Gaudreau may convince them to move a bit quicker. It seems that the Flames and the Avalanche are the favourites to land the coveted player. Kadri wants to stay in Colorado but they only have about $3.9 million in cap room to make it happen. Keep in mind, that the Avs need to make some room in their bank account for one Nathan MacKinnon who will need a ton of money to re-sign him.
Could the New York Islanders be the dark horse in this? They have been very silent in making any moves and have a bit over $11 million in cap space.

Dallas Stars – John Klingberg
Rumor: Per – Jeff Marek – sportsnet.ca. On the latest 32 Thoughts podcast, Marek stated, “Don’t know if Detroit wants to go really long-term with Klingberg but I still think that as push is starting to become shove with the defencemen it feels like Detroit may be the ultimate destination here but we’ll see”.
In all the madness that prevailed on free agent day, one John Klingberg remains unsigned. While the Detroit Red Wings have vastly improved by adding such players as Andrew Copp, Dominik Kubalik, Ben Chiarot, and Ville Husso, adding Klingberg may be the icing on the cake. He wants a longer-term contract than Steve Yzerman wants, but things may progress here. They still have $10.3 million to play with, but who knows what Klingberg will demand.
Time is running short for Klingberg since many teams have already spent their cap money and have rosters in place. There’s still time left, and the way things have gone this summer predicting how this ends takes talent. He could even remain in Dallas if nothing else comes his way.
That concludes this Sunday edition of NHL rumors. We have been sending two articles (or more) a week your way and with things slowing down we may go down to one article. In any case, be sure to have your bookmark set to Full Press Hockey for all the latest news in the NHL.
