The New York Mets spent a lot of money. In this economy, dealing with baseball’s inflation, so far the Mets aren’t getting a lot for their money. Per dollar, they might be the lowest-performing team in the league and that’s not where they expected to be in early June.
Mets Bullpen is a Mess
Edwin Diaz is probably out until September at best. No shock there, and replacing him was going to be hard. But David Robertson has performed adequately. He has ten saves to go along with his 1.91 ERA, and the team only has seven blown saves. It’s the fifth through seventh innings that seems to be the problem. According to FanGraphs, the Mets have the 28th-ranked bullpen.
The Mets Signed Luke Voit
Ok, a few things to talk about here. Does this spell the end for Daniel Vogelbach, or does Mark Vientos get sent back to AAA after not getting a real shot? All this does is parade another former MLB player in the mix, and it ignores their pitching. It’s a minor-league deal, so he has to prove himself. Voit was a flash in the pan. Voit can play first base while slugger, Pete Alonso sits out with an injury. Sure, but Voit had nine home runs in 2022 and none in 2023. This is a patch, a bad patch if you ask me.

Mike Vasil Got Promoted
Who? He is the Mets’ 8th-best prospect, according to a few outlets. He is a starter who threw 51 decent innings in AA, and now he’s in AAA Syracuse. Will he provide any immediate help to the pitching staff in Flushing? No. He’s just a distraction, so the media doesn’t write about the road trip. Even getting a dog named Seaver isn’t going to stop the Mets from obsessing over the fact that they are a mediocre team.

The NL Wild Card Race
The Mets are third in the NL Wild Card race, and they are tied with the Reds. They are three games back. That’s not where they wanted to be more than ten days into the month of June. Mets Owner, Steven Cohen has remained calm and hasn’t lashed out, but fans are growing tired of the situation. They are going to seek some change, or they might stop showing up at the ballpark. I don’t think a firing is in the future, but if they can’t make a trade that really helps the team, that could change.
