The passing attack of the Cleveland Browns has not been explosive by any means since Kevin Stefanski took over prior to the 2020 season. A good reason for that has been the state of the quarterback position.
While Jacoby Brissett filled in admirably for the suspended Deshaun Watson, the offense was run using a very safe and methodical approach. This led to the Browns’ offense having just 11 touchdowns on the year that traveled at least 5 yards, tied for the 10th fewest in the NFL last season. Even though this was far from surprising considering the quarterback situation, expect that to change in 2023.

A regular offseason and full season of Watson at quarterback should lead to Cleveland’s passing attack performing better in this area. There were limitations with Brissett which were quite similar to those with the departed Baker Mayfield. The best quarterbacks in the league are drivers of an offense. As far as Brissett and Mayfield are concerned, they are merely passengers. It is more than fine as long as everything goes just right, but even the slightest misstep can have catastrophic results.
With Watson, the belief is that Cleveland now has a driver of the offense. With that should come more passing attempts traveling downfield. More importantly, passing touchdowns of more than 5 yards. If Watson is able to accomplish this it would also open up running lanes for Nick Chubb, resulting in an even more dangerous Browns offense overall. While they may not reach the league-leading 27 from Buffalo, Cleveland should be able to get closer to the top than the bottom in 2023.
