All Elite Wrestling made major headlines on Sunday night, October 1st, in Seattle, Washington. After the show’s main event was over, Adam Copeland/Edge debuted at AEW WrestleDream.
Adam Copeland was a WWE guy who went through it all, but after his final match in Toronto on Smackdown in August, he knew he wanted something more. He wanted to be free. Free, meaning he wanted more freedom to do what he wanted to do. Similar to when he started on the Indies before making it big in WWE.
There is freedom in WWE, but it comes with a price of stress and pressure. Now with a lighter work schedule, Adam Copeland will still be a full-time guy, but he is going to have more fun doing it.
With his arrival in AEW, it brought many to a time when the company was the hottest thing going. It was not too long ago, either. Fall of 2021, to be exact.
The exact date is September 5, 2021, in Chicago for All Out. That night, Bryan Danielson and Adam Cole debuted in the company. A month earlier, CM Punk came back to wrestling after a seven-year hiatus , not to mention the multitude of wrestlers that were there that had already come in with Malakai Black, Andrade El Idilo, Ethan Page, Ruby Soho, Jamie Hayter, 2Point0, Daniel Garcia, Jay Lethal, Bobby Fish, Kyle O’Reilly on his way.
Then 2022 saw Brody King, Buddy Matthews, Keith Lee, Swerve Strickland, Wheeler Yuta, William Regal, Toni Storm, Samoa Joe, Claudio Castagnoli, Rush, Jeff Hardy, Saraya, and others.
But nothing beats 2021. AEW was red hot. The company was really at its peak. There was a buzz around AEW that there had not been before even with the additions of FTR, Brodie Lee (RIP), Matt Hardy, Miro, Sting, Ricky Starks, and Lance Archer.
AEW is getting back to that time thanks to what Tony Khan has done with WrestleDream, All In, and All Out. And his latest move was signing Adam Copeland, something he wanted to do four years ago. This signing really brought life back to the company after the turmoil that was CM Punk and All In Brawl.
Something was missing. A star was missing. CM Punk was that star. He was a needle mover. And you can make the case he was the biggest signing in company history until Adam Copeland arrived. There is a breath of fresh air. As Khan stated a new era of AEW is beginning.

There was a stench around the company because there were people who did not want Punk to come back in 2023 after All Out aka Brawl Out 2022. However, while the company was doing fine, something was missing that attraction. They have it. While he may not move the needle like CM Punk, Adam Copeland coming to AEW is a monster deal.
This signing is bigger than Danielson, then Cole, then Moxley, and even Punk. The dream matches are there. People are going to want to tune in to see what happens and where Adam Copeland goes. He is a familiar face to wrestling fans. They know who he is. And that pop Sunday proves it.
We all know how much Punk meant to AEW and Tony Khan really did not want to get rid of him, but he had no choice. But the roster and product are in a really good place. Look at what MJF is doing: Jay White, Adam Cole, Bryan Danielson, and the list goes on. Now, Adam Copeland will add his name to the mix.
At first, you might not see a true reflection in the numbers, but it will show as the months go on. You have to wonder what the PPV buy rate is for WrestleDream. Early estimates have it at over 100,000 PPV buys. That is truly impressive based on a rumour Adam Copeland might be there.
Like Punk, Copeland was able to draw interest before he even showed up. That is the mark of a superstar and name recognition.
And as Adam Copeland has stated, it is not about the tribalism that fuels the business. It is enjoying everything out there. And there is so much to enjoy out there.
But you have to wonder, with Adam Copeland full time and still being able to work and AEW knowing how to use legends the right way, he could be the biggest signing in AEW history.
