It is everyone’s favorite time of year when the first official College Football Rankings come out from the Playoff Committee.
We have already seen the latest AP Top 25 Poll, which can be found here on Full Press Coverage. We knew there were going to be differences between the Top 25 Poll and the College Football Committee’s rankings. It is a given. They usually never align. There was a lot of speculation heading into this one about Georgia and whether they would truly be the number-one team in the nation.
Again it is week one of these rankings, so let’s try not to overreact, but we all do. And with that being said, let’s dissect the first official College Football Playoff Rankings.
The biggest difference is the 1-4 from the AP Top 25 and College Football Playoff Committee Rankings. Georgia is number one in the AP, but Ohio State is number one in the playoff rankings. And it should be no surprise the Buckeyes are number one because of their resume with wins over Notre Dame and Penn State. Georgia has struggled this season, especially earlier in the year. The Bulldogs had the best outing against Florida this past week.
The two-time defending national champions are two. Again the Bulldogs are the champs and they play in the SEC. Michigan drops to three because of their schedule, even though they look like the best team. Florida State rounds out the top four. Meanwhile, the two Pac-12 schools, Washington and Oregon, are five and six, respectively.

Other things to note is that Oklahoma is nine in the CFB Playoff Rankings and 10 in the AP Top 25. Again feel that the Sooners win over Texas helps them. However, their poor play is why they are not ahead of Texas. Penn State is behind Ole Miss in these rankings, but in front of them in the AP Top 25. Interesting to see Louisville ranked higher than Notre Dame in these rankings, but again wins matter. Again the Committee does not value the wins in the Mountain West or the American Athletic Conference because Tulane and Air Force are 24th and 25th respectively. Meanwhile, USC is ahead of them and their defense is horrible and a reason they are low in both polls. Again inconsistencies but it is only week 1 of these rankings.
