It is everyone’s favorite time of year when the College Football Rankings come out from the Playoff Committee. This is the penultimate rankings before the final rankings come out on Sunday.
We have already seen the latest AP Top 25 Poll, which can be found here on Full Press Coverage. We know there will always be differences between the AP Top 25 Poll and the College Football Committee’s Playoff Rankings. It is a given. They usually never align. However, the big question entering this week’s rankings coming out of rivalry weekend is where will Ohio St be ranked.
Ohio St lost a close game to Michigan. We see Michigan is back to number two as they are in the AP Top 25 Poll. And we can pencil them in as they face Iowa in the Big Ten Title Game. But Ohio St being sixth is huge for their chances to make the College Football Playoff again this season.
We are going into the fifth week of these rankings, and the shouting match and the shouting match will be getting even louder. And with the final rankings coming after Championship Weekend, the noise will be even louder. Let’s dissect the fifth official College Football Playoff Rankings.
Let’s start with the top four in the College Football Rankings. Like the AP Top 25, Georgia is number one, Michigan is number two, and Washington is number three. The fourth through sixth spots are interesting. With Florida State being back at four, Oregon at five, and Ohio St at six. Texas is still ahead of Alabama, but things will get interesting if Alabama beats Georgia on Saturday.
Again, the committee, like the voters in the AP Top 25, is unsure of Florida State, who is now with Jordan Travis for the rest of the season. The Seminoles did not look good against a mediocre Florida team on Saturday. The loss by Louisville to a good Kentucky hurts the Seminoles’ chances to make the playoff even if they are undefeated, because the teams near them have better resumes. In order for Florida St to get in they need to win with style. But that is a big if against a good Louisville team.
And yes, style points still matter. If Texas wins against Oklahoma State going away, they are in. If they struggle, there is a debate to keep them out. The Pac-12, SEC, and Big 12 will sort itself out. The winner of the Pac-12 title between Washington and Oregon is in. That is a defacto play-in game.

Spots six through eight will also work themselves out as Alabama and Jalen Milroe will need to play better if they want to play spoiler and cause some chaos. If Bama wins out, Texas wins, and Florida State wins then things get interesting.

Again, the AP and Top 25 College Football Rankings normally don’t match, but they did this week. Arizona is 15 this week in the Committee’s rankings while they are 15 in the AP Top 25. Lots on the line for Tulane and Liberty this week. The winner of their championship game will get a spot in the New Year’s Six Bowl.
Again, it is Week 5 of the College Football Playoff Committee Rankings. Championship Weekend will be crucial to see who plays where and in what bowl games. It will be fun to find out after Championship Saturday is over.
