What a day in college football. The Alabama Crimson Tide are SEC Champions. And now the debate has begun on who is going to the College Football Playoff.
Washington went unbeaten, winning the Pac-12 Championship on Friday. So the Huskies are in. But with Alabama defeating Georgia by a score of 27-24 to win the SEC, things open up for a bunch of teams. However, before we get into the scenarios, let’s take a look at a wild and crazy SEC Championship Game.
Alabama dominated this one from start to finish. What a day for Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe. It all started last week with the Hail Mary in the Iron Bowl to Isiah Bond. Isiah Bond had a great day catching the ball as well, especially in the fourth quarter when Milroe went four-for-four throwing the ball.
Not to mention, Georgia had yet to play a team as good as they were or superior than they were all season. The Bulldogs were able to come back from several deficits but could not do it against Alabama. However, spotting Alabama the lead going into the half, you just can’t do that, especially against a Nick Saban-coached team. And give credit to Saban and what he has done this season. Saban and the Crimson Tide were left for dead.
Nobody thought this team was a playoff team earlier in the season. However, Bama came up big against Ole Miss, Auburn, Texas A&M, and LSU to win the SEC West. Then, the Crimson Tide beat the Bulldogs in the SEC Championship. Just incredible. Nick Saban is undefeated against Kirby Smart in the SEC Championship. By the way, George’s last loss was to Nick Saban and Alabama in the SEC championship in their first run to the national championship.

Alabama beating Georgia opens up so many doors and so much debate. This was a scenario coming into Championship Weekend. There was a lot of debate coming into the SEC Championship Game. Now, there is even more after this game.
So the debate begins here on Championship Saturday and into Sunday in that committee room. Texas Won the Big 12 Championship earlier in the day. In Week 2, Texas Beat Alabama. But it was Week 2 of the season. Alabama is a different team than they were back then; however, the Longhorns did win by double digits in Tuscaloosa.
If Michigan wins, they are. If Florida State wins against Louisville, they’re undefeated. However, the debate will come down to Texas, Florida, and even Georgia. Does the SEC get left out because we have the chaos scenario?
Does the Committee put Alabama over Texas? Well, we’ve seen it. It’s been done before. In 2016, Penn State beat Ohio State and went on to win the Big 10 Championship, leaving them out of the College Football Playoff. Again, the regular season head-to-head matchup matters, but in the end, it does not matter. Especially this time of year. It’s the best teams it’s not the deserving teams.
Florida State has issues at quarterback. Their backup quarterback is questionable for the ACC Championship, as we saw their third-string quarterback start in the ACC Championship game. The ACC is down this year. The Big 12 is down this year. Could Oregon sneak in with two losses? That’s tough. No two-loss team has made the four-team College Football Playoffs.
Then there is Ohio State. They are one of the best four teams in the nation. However, they did not play for a conference championship. That did not matter last year and they got in. However, there are too many good teams for the Buckeyes to get in.
It’s crazy to think what this win means for Alabama and the College Football Playoff because guess what chaos has happened? It’s here. Imagine. If Florida State loses, then it does not matter. Alabama and Texas are in. Regardless, Florida State is not a top-four team, even with a win and an undefeated record. They’re just not the same team without Jordan Travis.
So there are so many options, but what a year for Alabama. What a run. Give credit to Jaylen Milroe. He was benched after Week 2. The defense was strong all year. And here they are, SEC champions. They may not get in the playoff as it’s out of their hands, but the debate surely will begin Saturday night into Sunday.
