I know; the headline should probably be “The Dodgers Sign Yamamoto.” But the pain of Mets fans seeing their flush-with-cash front office not get their man is the bigger story. So far, David Stearns has attracted former Brewers and an oft-injured Yankees pitcher. Getting Adrian Houser means he will start 20 games, and you’ll need another starter to fill in. It’s not a huge addition. It’s not like Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery, who are both still out there. The Mets are a fourth-place team and will struggle to be a playoff contender. Was that the vision for this year? It might have been.
The Mets Can’t Compete with the Dodgers
The Dodgers may not win the World Series, but they won free agency. They gave Yamamoto $325 million in non-deferred dollars with a $50 million signing bonus. Did the Mets match all of that? We’ve yet to get confirmation. What we do know is the Mets are no longer a destination team. They have a rookie manager and a new GM, and money isn’t buying their way out of what can be a very mediocre season. The Mets have bullpen needs, starter needs, needs at DH, and possibly at third base. The Mets have filled in some slots with low-cost players and that’s not going to move the needle with the fan base this offseason.
Mets Fans Want Pete Alonso Extended
Does being out of the Yamamoto sweepstakes mean that slugger Pete Alonso will finally get wined and dined, really Scott Boras, until their price is met? I don’t think so. I think Alonso wants to test free agency, and I think the Mets have a good idea that’s the case. Alonso might start the season in Flushing but they will trade him if he cuts off negotiations or states he’s testing the market. That’s the way baseball works, and it might break the hearts of Mets fans, but money isn’t always the #1 thing to players who already have some money. Maybe Pete doesn’t believe in the Mets’ plan. It looks shaky right here, right now. If Steven Cohen stepped in and got Alonso extended this week, all would be forgotten, but I sense there is more to it than that.

Mets Odds of Winning It All Isn’t Great
According to ESPN, the Mets are a +2500 to win the World Series. They are the 11th biggest threat to win it all, somehow, they are head of the Arizona Diamondbacks, I think I would swap the two, but that’s not that important today. The Mets need to be honest with the fans about this season. So far, they haven’t been unless they want to be the 11th best.
