Those expecting Kenny Pickett to be the undisputed starter in Pittsburgh next season will have to think again. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said on Thursday that competition will be brought in for the former first-round draft pick.
It is hard to argue with this methodology from the Steelers. This is a team that has an offensive identity crisis, and the lack of stability at the most important position in all of sports is not helping. Pickett has been fine for the most part. Not good by any means, but also not a complete disaster. This puts Pittsburgh in a tough spot, and it is one that no team likes to find themselves in.

Pickett has completed 62.6% of his passes for 4,474 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in 25 career games. Throwing just under half of a touchdown per game is hardly an acceptable rate for a starting NFL quarterback, and it is no wonder why the Steelers are evaluating their options.
While a change of offensive philosophy is most likely coming from an outside offensive coordinator, bringing in someone to either push Pickett to play at a higher level or prove he is not worth spending any more time on is the right decision. The Steelers have one more season left before having to make a decision on whether or not to pick up Pickett’s fifth-year option. How next season plays out seems like it will influence that decision one way or the other.
