There has been an expectation that the Cleveland Browns were going to do some financial maneuvers to create cap space. Those maneuvers have now begun. It has been reported that the contract of cornerback Denzel Ward has been restructured.
As a result of the restructuring, the Browns have cleared about $11.36 million in cap space. Cleveland is now on the positive end of the salary cap with about $3.6 million to work with. While the number is not large, getting out of the red is a good start to the offseason.

Restructuring contracts of players with high salaries are just one of the ways that have contributed to the Browns having cap room. The massive cap jump leaguewide was a primary driver of getting on the right side of the cap in Cleveland. Getting an additional $30 million is going to allow a bit more flexibility for teams to work with. Teams like the Browns will now be able to work around the increased number and keep high-priced players who may have been cap casualties. Ward was not in danger of being a cap casualty, but his restructure could lead to someone else staying in Cleveland. It is these types of financial moves that usually end up paying off big-time during the regular season. Now it is up to the Browns to do a little more work to take advantage of their contention window, and that should be coming relatively soon.
