There is a new running back in Baltimore. Not just any running back. Derrick Henry. The former Tennessee Titan has reportedly agreed to terms on a two-year deal $16 million deal with the Ravens that could be worth $20 million in incentives.
This is a big-time addition for the Ravens offense. Baltimore has mostly featured a group of running backs during Lamar Jackson’s time as quarterback but now will have a clear number one to lead the way. Henry’s presence in Baltimore’s backfield is only going to make Jackson that more effective. Before, teams could sell out on trying to stop Jackson and let what happens happen with the other backs, but not anymore. Henry is going to command the attention of the defense, which should allow the offense to be even more effective, a proposition that should terrify every other team in the AFC North.

It does need to be said that Henry has seen a steep drop in effectiveness in recent seasons. Seeing his yards per game average plummet from 126.7 in 2020 to 68.6 last season. While some of that does come with age, an even larger factor is the state of the Titans offense. Tennessee was very dependent on Henry to do everything and eventually catch up. A one-dimensional offense combined with poor quarterback play can only get a team so far before they become ineffective. The good news for Henry is that playing alongside a two-time MVP winner should make his job a little easier, and the result should be a return to form in 2024.
