The New England Patriots will be without defensive tackle Christian Barmore and cornerback Christian Gonzalez for Sunday’s Week 4 matchup against the Buffalo Bills.
Head coach Mike Vrabel announced Friday that both players would miss the game with shoulder injuries, WHDH reported. The decision leaves New England facing a divisional opponent without two important defenders.
Barmore and Gonzalez ruled out with shoulder injuries
Both players were listed as nonparticipants with shoulder injuries on the Patriots’ Thursday injury report. Friday’s announcement settles their availability for Buffalo; it does not establish a longer-term recovery timetable.
What the injuries mean for New England
Gonzalez’s absence creates a coverage challenge on the outside, while Barmore’s removes an option from the interior defensive line. Those losses put more responsibility on the remaining rotation and secondary.
The tactical question is how New England balances coverage help with pressure. Providing extra support at cornerback can limit the resources available elsewhere, while generating pressure with the defensive front can reduce how long the secondary must hold up.
The Patriots will need contributions across both units Sunday. Any updates on the players’ availability beyond this game will depend on further information from the team.
