The Kansas City Chiefs are not waiting until the final hours before the NFL trade deadline to start looking for help.

Kansas City has reportedly been working the phones for weeks in search of another wide receiver for Patrick Mahomes, and the need has become harder to ignore after two straight games without a Mahomes touchdown pass.

There is no completed deal yet, and no single target has emerged as the confirmed favorite. But with the Nov. 10 deadline approaching, the Chiefs are clearly exploring the market.

Kansas City Has Been Working the Phones

Prime Video insider James Palmer reported this week that the Chiefs have been calling around the league for weeks in search of receiver help.

That tracks with what the offense has looked like recently.

Mahomes has gone consecutive games without throwing a touchdown pass, only the fourth time in his career that has happened. Kansas City has also struggled to consistently create separation outside, especially after losing Tyquan Thornton earlier in the season.

The problem is not that the Chiefs lack pass catchers entirely.

It is that too much of the offense is being compressed into the middle of the field.

The Chiefs Need Someone Who Can Change Coverage

Rashee Rice and Travis Kelce are still dangerous underneath and between the numbers.

What Kansas City has lacked is a receiver who can consistently threaten defenses vertically or force corners to respect one-on-one matchups outside.

CBS Sports identified wide receiver as Kansas City’s clearest deadline need, specifically because a field-stretching threat would create more room for Rice and Kelce underneath.

That is the type of addition that could change the geometry of the entire offense without requiring Andy Reid to redesign it.

Josh Downs Is an Obvious Fit

Josh Downs is one of the most logical names on the market.

He has requested a trade from Indianapolis, and the Colts have already shown a willingness to move established veterans before the deadline.

Downs is not the traditional vertical burner Kansas City lacks, but he gives Mahomes something the Chiefs also badly need: a receiver who can separate quickly against man coverage.

NFL.com listed Kansas City as one of the best fits for Downs, citing his short-area quickness and ability to win over the middle.

He would not solve every problem, but he would immediately make the passing game more difficult to defend.

Brian Thomas Jr. Would Be the Bigger Swing

Brian Thomas Jr. is the more aggressive option.

Thomas has seen his role shrink in Jacksonville and continues to be mentioned in trade speculation as the deadline approaches.

Thomas acknowledged the ongoing trade chatter this week while saying his focus is on proving what he can still do on the field.

His appeal to Kansas City is obvious.

Thomas has the size and vertical ability to threaten defenses downfield in a way the Chiefs currently lack.

The challenge would be cost.

Jacksonville would have little incentive to move a young former first-round pick cheaply, especially to another AFC team.

Jauan Jennings Would Give Kansas City a Different Kind of Toughness

Jauan Jennings is another name that has surfaced around the broader receiver market.

He would not be a pure speed addition, but he can win through contact, work intermediate areas and give Mahomes another trustworthy target on third down.

For a Chiefs offense that has occasionally struggled when Rice or Kelce are taken away, that kind of reliability would matter.

Jennings would be more of a floor-raising move than a ceiling-changing one.

Could Kansas City Aim Even Higher?

The dream scenario would be landing a true outside difference-maker.

NFL.com recently floated George Pickens as the ideal Chiefs trade target if Dallas were willing to listen.

Pickens would give Mahomes exactly what the current offense lacks: a receiver capable of beating man coverage and winning vertically outside the numbers.

But that would require Dallas to become a seller, and there has been little indication the Cowboys are eager to do that.

That makes the more realistic market Downs, Thomas, Jennings and other receivers from teams willing to listen.

Kansas City Does Not Need Another Superstar

The Chiefs do not necessarily need to find another No. 1 receiver.

They need someone defenses have to respect.

That is the distinction.

Mahomes has spent years proving he can win without an elite traditional receiving corps. But the current offense has become too easy to compress when defenses do not fear being beaten outside.

One legitimate separator could change that.

The Seattle Loss Put the Problem on Display

Kansas City’s 20-3 loss to Seattle made the weakness especially obvious.

The Seahawks took away the run, challenged Kansas City’s receivers in man coverage and never paid a consistent price for it.

NFL.com’s deadline analysis highlighted the Chiefs’ inability to create receiver separation in that game, pointing to the lack of a dependable man-beater as one of the offense’s biggest problems.

That is not something Kansas City can afford to ignore if it believes this roster is still capable of winning the AFC.

What Happens Next?

The Chiefs have time before the Nov. 10 deadline.

But the fact that they have reportedly been making calls for weeks suggests this is more than casual interest.

Kansas City knows what it is missing.

The question is whether the front office can find the right player at a price it is willing to pay.

Josh Downs makes sense.

Brian Thomas Jr. would be the bigger swing.

Jauan Jennings would give the offense another dependable option.

And if a surprise name becomes available, the Chiefs are clearly in position to listen.

For a team still built around Patrick Mahomes and championship expectations, standing still may be the bigger risk.
