It has been an eventful last few weeks for the Boston Bruins.
Leading up to the start of NHL free agency, the team traded forwards Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno to the Blackhawks for some much-needed cap relief. Then, as free agency got under way, they signed James van Riemsdyk, Kevin Shattenkirk, and Milan Lucic but watched trade deadline acquisitions Dmitry Orlov and Tyler Bertuzzi sign with other Eastern Conference teams.
With the futures of both Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci still undecided, the Bruins are exploring the trade market according to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period and the Jets’ Mark Scheifele could be a potential target.
Scheifele, the 30-year-old center from Kitchener, Ontario, is entering his 13th season in the NHL and final year of his current contract with the Winnipeg Jets which pays him $6.125 million in 2023. Of course, this could be an obstacle for the cap-strapped Bruins but if Bergeron and/or Krejci doesn’t return, the Bruins would be in desperate need of a top six center and Scheifele would more than fulfill that need.

Scheifele is coming off a season where he scored a career-best 42 goals while adding 26 helpers. In 12 seasons, all in Winnipeg, Scheifele has tallied 272 goals and 373 assists across 723 games. In addition, he has 19 goals and 13 assists over 37 postseason games with the Jets. A majority of those points came during the 2017-18 season where Scheifele tallied 14 goals and six assists across 17 postseason games.
Currently, without Bergeron or Krejci, Charlie Coyle slides in as your top center with someone like Pavel Zacha manning the second line. Of course, newcomers Morgan Geekie and Patrick Brown add depth at the position but it’s not an ideal situation if nothing changes for a team that won a record 65 games a season.
