The New York Mets are currently 18.5 games behind the surging Atlanta Braves. That divisional race is over. The Braves will take it easy. Even after a modest two-game winning streak, the Mets have five teams ahead of them in the wild card standings, and they are eight games out of the third and final spot. Their bullpen can’t hold leads. It’s the opposite of last year. At the end of the year, both Buck Showalter and general manager Billy Eppler will likely be shown the door, and it will be deserved.
Mets Trades Have Been Zero Sum Deals
The Mets aren’t going to try and buy their way out of trouble unless they get close to the playoffs. Right now, they have been making deals that don’t move the needle this year. Will some pan out in the future? Maybe, but the fans were hoping for something that could help them get back into contention, but that seems out of the question. Steven Cohen is now learning about baseball the hard way.
The Phillies Have Their Issues
The Phillies made it to the world series and lost last year. It was a great year where everything clicked just at the right time. That doesn’t seem like that is going to happen this year. Offseason acquisition, Trea Turner, is hitting just .249 with eight home runs and 29 RBI with 18 steals. Last season he hit 21 home runs with 100 RBI and 27 steals. He’s way off that pace. Bryce Harper, coming back from Tommy John surgery, still can’t throw the ball and has no power swing. He has just three home runs with 22 RBI. Nick Castellano’s numbers are up but without the other two at full strength, making the playoffs will be hard. They are 1 ½ games out of the final playoff spot, so let’s see what they do at the trade deadline.

Arraez Still Flirting with .400
When the Marlins acquired Luis Arraez in the offseason, they couldn’t have imagined that he would have a legit chance at hitting .400. Last season, he led the American League with a .316 batting average with Minnesota. Teams seemed to not value high-average hitters anymore until this season. Arraez is leading his team into a potential playoff bid. The Marlins are in the first wild card spot. He has 41 RBI, close to his career high, and he’s leading the NL with an eye-popping .440 on-base percentage. He’s now a two-time All-Star as well.
