If you plan to eventually win a Super Bowl, it certainly doesn’t hurt to excel against the opposing conference.
On Thursday night, the Chiefs will kick off the National Football League’s 104th season by hosting the Detroit Lions.
Over the past five seasons, Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs have really had their way with the teams in the NFC. In particular, quarterback Patrick Mahomes has put up some pretty sensational numbers when going against the National Football Conference.
The Imposing Numbers
Since 2018, Mahomes’ first full season as the club’s starting signal-caller, Reid’s club is an impressive 19-3 in interconference contests. With Mahomes as the starter (he missed games vs. the Packers and Vikings in 2019), the Chiefs are a starting 18-2 vs. NFC squads. Throw in three Super Bowl appearances (LIV, LV, and LVII), and the number swells to 20-3.
As for Mahomes, in those 23 outings, he’s been nothing short of amazing. He’s hit on 587 of his 909 throws, an impressive 64.6 completion percentage, for a combined 6,936 yards and 40 more touchdown passes (56) than interceptions (16). What’s interesting is that four of those 16 picks have come in the Super Bowls vs. the 49ers (2), Buccaneers (2), and Eagles (0).

Just this past season alone, the Chiefs not only prevailed in a grand total of six interconference matchups, they won all five regular-season encounters by 10 or more points. They outscored the Arizona Cardinals (44-21), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (41-31), San Francisco 49ers (44-23), Los Angeles Rams (26-10) and Seattle Seahawks (24-10) by a combined 179-95 count.
Throw in the come-from-behind 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII at Tempe, and Reid’s club averaged a blistering 36.2 points per game vs. NFC teams in 2022.
There are so many ways to break down the various ways that Mahomes has been dominant. From his overall play to his performances vs. divisional rivals. On Thursday night at home against the Lions, it will be fascinating to see he and his team can continue their mastery of the other conference.
