The Pittsburgh Steelers have found their next offensive coordinator, hiring former Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith. Smith was relieved of his duties in Atlanta after this past season following a third consecutive 7-10 finish.
Even though Smith’s time with the Falcons garnered plenty of justified criticism, there is still hope that this hire can work out for the Steelers. Prior to taking over in Atlanta, Smith was the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans. Smith was able to make Ryan Tannehill look a lot better than he actually is. Some even believed Tannehill to be a fringe Top-10 quarterback during that time. A belief that has since been proven false.

Being able to make a very forgettable player in Tannehill look better than his ability is very appealing for Pittsburgh right now. The Steelers are entering year three with Kenny Pickett, and things are not looking great. Pickett has not played up to expectations so far, with questions growing about his viability as Pittsburgh’s quarterback moving forward.
With Smith now being involved in the Steelers’ offense, it should hopefully provide some clarity about Pickett. Either he will be able to prove he can handle the starting quarterback duties in Pittsburgh, or he is not good enough to warrant further playing time. Getting an answer, positive or negative, will help the Steelers move forward on how to address their roster accordingly.
