The New England Patriots are waiting for additional information on A.J. Brown after their biggest offseason addition suffered a right ankle injury during Wednesday night’s 13-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Brown was injured early in the third quarter when Seahawks cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett landed on the outside of his ankle while defending a low pass from Drake Maye. Brown received attention on the field, limped to the sideline and later went to the locker room for X-rays. He was initially listed as questionable before being ruled out for the remainder of the game.

The latest postgame update offered little clarity. Head coach Mike Vrabel said he did not have an immediate report on Brown’s condition, while postgame footage showed the receiver leaving Lumen Field in a walking boot. New England has not confirmed the specific nature or severity of the injury.

Brown caught three of four targets for 26 yards in his Patriots debut. He also drew a 34-yard defensive pass-interference penalty that helped set up New England’s only touchdown.

His availability will become one of the Patriots’ biggest storylines over the next several days. New England has additional recovery time before hosting Pittsburgh on Sept. 20, but Brown’s absence would leave Maye relying more heavily on Romeo Doubs, DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins and Hunter Henry.

For now, the Patriots know only that Brown injured his right ankle and could not finish the opener. A firm timetable will have to wait until the team completes its evaluation.
