The Patriots gave themselves room to work through an uneven offensive afternoon by making sure Pittsburgh had an even more difficult one.
New England defeated the Steelers 20–3 Sunday at Gillette Stadium, improving to 1–1 behind a defense that repeatedly stopped drives and eventually supplied the touchdown that put the game firmly in the Patriots’ hands.
Barmore and Ponder Deliver the Decisive Play
The biggest moment came early in the fourth quarter.
Christian Barmore stripped Aaron Rodgers on a sack, and Elijah Ponder recovered the football and returned it 19 yards for a touchdown. The play stretched New England’s advantage to 20–3. Patriots.com
For a Patriots offense that had struggled to finish possessions consistently, the defensive score provided valuable breathing room. Pittsburgh now needed multiple touchdowns against a unit that had kept it out of the end zone all afternoon.
New England Keeps Pittsburgh Off Schedule
The numbers reflected how difficult New England made things for Rodgers.
The Patriots recorded four sacks, held Pittsburgh to 235 total yards and allowed only two conversions on 12 third-down attempts. Christian Elliss contributed 12 tackles and a sack, while Rodgers finished with 187 passing yards and an interception.
Rookie Gabe Jacas supplied the late interception, ending another Steelers scoring opportunity and helping preserve the comfortable margin.
The pass rush deserves credit, but Pittsburgh’s third-down struggles tell the broader story. New England consistently ended possessions before the Steelers could turn them into points.
Offense Provides Enough Support
TreVeyon Henderson supplied New England’s offensive touchdown on a 39-yard run, finishing with 76 rushing yards. Romeo Doubs added 96 receiving yards on three catches, while Drake Maye completed 14 of 22 passes for 208 yards with an interception.
Those contributions were enough Sunday. Greater consistency from the passing game remains a reasonable expectation moving forward.
One strong afternoon also warrants some perspective. The Patriots still have work to do before this becomes a dependable weekly formula. But their defense gave them exactly what they needed against Pittsburgh: stops, takeaways and a scoring play that removed much of the late-game uncertainty.
