The San Jose Sharks have put the captain’s “C” on Macklin Celebrini.
The team announced Friday, September 25, that the 20-year-old forward is its 11th full-time captain and the youngest active captain in the NHL. The appointment follows a season in which he finished fourth in league scoring with 115 points, including 45 goals and 70 assists.
Joe Thornton Welcomes the New Captain
Former captain Joe Thornton presented Celebrini with his new jersey during a team meeting, as shown in the Sharks’ announcement video. It was a fitting connection between the franchise’s past and its next chapter.
Celebrini’s 115 points broke Thornton’s single-season club record of 114 from 2006-07, Field Level Media reported via Reuters. He becomes San Jose’s first captain since Logan Couture retired in April 2025.
Why the Sharks Chose Celebrini
The decision extended beyond the scoresheet. In Sheng Peng’s reporting for San Jose Hockey Now, general manager Mike Grier pointed to Celebrini contacting draft picks, organizing teammates’ early return and making newcomers feel included. Players reassigned to the AHL specifically mentioned that welcoming environment in their exit meetings.
Those details matter because a captain’s influence has to reach beyond the top line. Making a prospect comfortable at camp and setting expectations for veterans are different responsibilities. San Jose’s explanation suggests it believes Celebrini can handle both.
A Long-Term Commitment to San Jose’s Centerpiece
The appointment follows Celebrini’s five-year, $94 million extension. He will play the 2026-27 season on the final year of his entry-level contract before that extension begins, according to Field Level Media.
The contract and captaincy together leave little ambiguity about who the Sharks intend to build around. The next challenge is collective: translating an exceptional individual standard into a team that can sustain it throughout the schedule. The letter makes Celebrini’s responsibility official; the results will depend on the group around him, too.
