J.J. McCarthy has been waiting for a real opportunity.
Now he has one.
The New York Giants will start McCarthy against the Houston Texans on Sunday, giving the former first-round pick his first start since arriving from Minnesota in a late-September trade.
For a team still trying to find stability at quarterback, this is more than a one-week substitution.
It is a chance for McCarthy to change the direction of the Giants’ offense.
Why the Giants Are Turning to J.J. McCarthy
Reuters reported Wednesday that head coach John Harbaugh named McCarthy the starter against Houston.
Jameis Winston had started the previous four games while Jaxson Dart remained sidelined.
But McCarthy forced his way into the conversation last week.
After replacing Winston in the fourth quarter against New Orleans, McCarthy completed 11 of 21 passes for 243 yards and led three scoring drives in a furious comeback attempt.
He also threw an interception, but the offense looked noticeably more aggressive with him in the game.
This Is McCarthy’s First Real Chance Since the Trade
The Giants acquired McCarthy from Minnesota on Sept. 28 for a 2027 fifth-round draft pick.
At the time, it looked like a depth move with upside.
Now it looks like something more.
McCarthy was the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and has already started NFL games, but his career has been interrupted by injuries, competition and circumstance.
New York now gets to evaluate him in a much more meaningful setting.
Houston Is a Difficult First Test
There are easier defenses to face when trying to win a starting job.
Houston has won two straight and has allowed only 23 points during that stretch.
The Texans’ front can create pressure without constantly blitzing, which means McCarthy will have to process quickly and avoid the kind of risky throws that can turn a promising start into a short experiment.
That makes Sunday a useful test.
If McCarthy can handle Houston, the Giants will have a much stronger case for keeping him under center.
The Giants Need More Than Energy
McCarthy brought energy against New Orleans.
That helped.
But energy is not enough to hold an NFL starting job.
He has to protect the football.
He has to manage pressure.
He has to get the offense into the right protections and make decisions quickly enough to keep the Texans from dictating the game.
That is the difference between an exciting relief appearance and a sustainable starting performance.
The Opportunity Is Bigger Than One Game
The Giants are still alive in a chaotic NFC East.
That matters.
New York is not handing McCarthy the offense in a meaningless rebuilding month. It is giving him a chance while the division is still within reach.
That raises the stakes considerably.
A strong performance could make it difficult to go back to Winston.
A poor performance could send the Giants right back into the same quarterback uncertainty they have been trying to escape.
What McCarthy Needs to Show
The Giants do not need McCarthy to be spectacular.
They need him to look in control.
Can he avoid turnovers?
Can he consistently find Malik Nabers and Isaiah Likely?
Can he keep the offense moving when Houston takes away the first read?
Can he make enough plays outside structure without turning every possession into improvisation?
Those are the questions Sunday can begin to answer.
The Job Is There for Him to Take
New York did not trade for McCarthy to hide him on the depth chart forever.
The Giants wanted upside.
Now they are giving him the chance to show it.
This is the first time since arriving in New York that McCarthy has control of the offense from the opening snap.
If he plays well, there is no reason this has to be a one-game assignment.
The Giants just handed J.J. McCarthy a real opportunity.
Now it is on him to keep it.
