The situation between the Detroit Red Wings and Dylan Larkin has reached its breaking point. Larkin has withheld his services and will no longer report to the Red Wings, saying he feels the team has had enough time to trade him. In return, Interim GM Shawn Horcoff announced the Red Wings have suspended Larkin without pay as they try to find a resolution that benefits all parties.

During an appearance on TSN Radio in Montreal, Jim Biringer of Full Press Hockey and NHLRumors.com was asked how much longer it would be before the Detroit Red Wings trade Dylan Larkin.

Host: “Want to get your thoughts, Jim, on this? Dylan Larkin getting booed during the Red Wings home opener in Detroit. I don’t know what that means. At that point, does it speed up the process? Will we never see him again in the Red Wings jersey? Will the Red Wings be able to get fair market value? How does this play out over the next couple of months here between him and the Red Wings?

Jim Biringer: “Yeah, I mean, the Red Wings home opener, look, I might have touched a nerve on Twitter. I said that the reaction to me seems like Dylan Larkin played his last game in Detroit. Whether he gets traded, whether he doesn’t play, he’s on IR. I know what the coach said. Word is he did want to be out there and do all that and take the abuse from the fans, and the fans have every right to do that.

But the other side of it is the Connor Hellebuyck side of it, which is if you really didn’t want to be there and you really truly wanted to be traded, take the fine, take the suspension, because realistically, while he is on the roster, is he really on the roster?

To me, he’s already got, if not one, both feet out the door. He’s trying to be a good soldier, but also I get it from his perspective. This dude was the face of this rebuild for 10 years because the guy who was fired in the offseason refused to talk about what was going on in Detroit. There is not a lot of information that comes out of Detroit, and when he did talk, and the team was making progress, and the team was in first place in January this past year in the Atlantic Division, and then tanked, and we’re not there yet.

Maybe our record is better than what we are. That doesn’t send a good message to the locker room and players around the league. Let’s be honest here. I think Detroit is not a destination for players anymore, and you’re seeing it because of the chaos that is going on. I think Dylan Larkin’s days are numbered.”

Full Press Hockey Analysis: Opening night in Detroit felt like Dylan Larkin’s last game in Detroit. While he played 10 days and performed to the best of his ability, he felt toward the end of the trip that it was time to try a different course of action to get a trade. A reconciliation was not happening. His mind was not fully in Detroit.

As his agent said, he remained professional through all of this, and he had enough and will hold out until a trade happens. In hindsight, which is always 20/20, maybe Larkin should have stayed at home given what happened with Connor Hellebuyck and the Winnipeg Jets. Not showing up forced a deadline to return from suspension, which nobody in that organization wanted. The player didn’t want to return either.

As Adama Fantilli of the Columbus Blue Jackets stated after the Kirill Marchenko trade, it is hard to be in the same room with a guy who doesn’t want to be there. The players in Detroit will rally and try to turn things around. But as for Dylan Larkin, things are complicated with the teams on his 10-team trade list, so he may have to go to a team off it.

While Shawn Horcoff doesn’t know how long this will last, he wants to find a resolution quickly that benefits the Detroit Red Wings in the immediate future and long term. It is no longer a matter of IF Dlyan Larkin gets traded, but WHEN.
