Shortly following Vikings coach Mike Zimmer’s statement that center Pat Elflein‘s injury was “serious,” reports are that Elflein will need to have surgery on his fractured left ankle. The injury came as a result of a defender falling and rolling over his ankle in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game. Elflein immediately went down in major pain.
Dr. Robert Anderson will perform the surgery in Green Bay next Monday, according to sources. There is still significant swelling in Elflein’s ankle, which is why they are waiting a few days to perform the procedure.
The injury caps off what was a tremendous rookie season for Elflein. The third-round pick from Ohio State anchored the offensive line all season. He was named to the All-Rookie team by the Pro Football Writers of America as a result.
As long as the surgery goes well and according to plan, the hope is to have Elflein ready to go for spring drills for the Vikings this upcoming season. He figures to be an essential member to the success of the Vikings offensive line for the foreseeable future.
