Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields hasn’t done anything yet in his capacity yet the difference between him and previous first-round quarterback Mitchell Trubisky is already evident.
The Chicago Bears just ended their rookie minicamp this past weekend. They got their first chance to see rookie quarterback (and possible franchise savior) Justin Field in action. By all accounts, he did great. His passes were crisp and his deep passes were a thing of beauty.
After a couple of days of practice, Fields raises hopes all over Chicago Bears Nation. Many fans feel the team finally found its franchise quarterback. They now have thoughts of long playoff runs.
We will eventually see many differences between Fields and the Bears’ previous first-round draft pick, Mitchell Trubisky. Trubisky had trouble with his mechanics and it affected his throwing. Fields has better mechanics and we’ll see a lot better throws from him. Additionally, Fields is great under pressure. He’s played in big high-pressured games in his college career. He went to the College Football Playoffs the last two years. Also, he went undefeated in one of the top conferences in the nation, the Big Ten.
We will see the differences between Fields and Trubisky on the field eventually. It could be late in the season or it could be right from the start of the season. Whenever it happens, we’ll see how different Fields is from Trubisky on the field.
We’ve already seen a big difference
While we wait to see the differences between Fields and Trubisky on the field, we’ve already seen some big differences off the field. Their personalities couldn’t be any different. Trubisky had that “Aw shucks” look to him. He was quiet and toed the company line. He always deferred to the coaches and spoke in cliches.
Fields, on the other hand, is completely different. He’s brash and confident, bordering on cockiness. That’s not a bad thing. He needs to be the leader of the franchise. All eyes are on him so he cannot shrink.
Fields had the spotlight thrust upon him nearly his entire football career. In his senior year in high school, he was the subject of a documentary (QB 1: Beyond The Lights) and had cameras follow him all season long. In addition, he had several of his games televised on ESPN. He was in a battle against Trevor Lawrence in an all-star game and he won the MVP award over the eventual number one overall pick.

Let’s not forget FIelds’ college career. He played in one of the toughest conferences, the Big Ten and finished his career undefeated in conference play. Making the Colle Football Playoffs two straight seasons put the spotlight on him.
That spotlight doesn’t affect Fields. In fact, he welcomes it. This is what he said in his press conference last week.
I’m made for this. I’m built for this. It’s nothing new to me. Just like you said, I’ve been kind of in the spotlight since high school…I don’t think there’s pressure on me because I expect myself to be a franchise quarterback.
For a team desperate to finally have a franchise quarterback, Fields is perfect. There is a lot of pressure on him to save the Chicago Bears. He can take that pressure and thrive. This is what the Chicago Bears need.
When head coach Matt Nagy announced that Andy Dalton would still receive the number one reps, it didn’t get Fields down. He understands what Nagy is doing. However, he wants to change the coach’s mind and announced it to the world.
Of course I think everybody on our team should be striving for a starting job, and if you’re not there’s no reason for you to be here. So of course I’m going to do everything I can to get that starting job. It’s not up to me. Coach Nagy has a set plan for my development, but I’m just going to work hard, keep my head down and keep grinding it out every day.
Fields is fearless. He works to be great. This is exactly what a team desperate for a franchise quarterback needs. He isn’t afraid to talk to his teammates to get them to play their best. Yes, the Bears have Akiem Hicks and Khalil Mack as leaders. However, it’s different when the quarterback is the leader. He’s the face of the franchise and should get the entire team in line. That is a big difference between Fields and Trubisky.
